Genetic Disorder Poster Project Name___________________________________________ Examine the list of genetic disorders below. Names will be drawn to determine who selects first. So choose a few disorders you are interested in. If you are not ready when your name is called you will be choosing last. Genetic Disorders and their symptoms o o o o o o o o o Achondroplasia: dwarf, bowed legs o o o o o o o o o o o o o Fragile X Syndrome: mental retardation, short, large narrow heads. o o o o o o Progeria: premature aging Albinism: lack of pigment Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: Lou Gehrig’s Disease – progressive loss of muscle control Cleft Lip and Palate: split in lip or roof in mouth Colorblindness: whatever kind, as long as it is genetic. Cri Du Chat Syndrome: babies cry with a cat-like sound, mental retardation Cystic Fibrosis: food doesn’t digest properly, become diabetic, prone to pneumonia, sterile if male. Fatal Down Syndrome: mental retardation, short, heart defects, mild facial defects. Edwards Syndrome: baby’s ability to grow and develop appropriately is delayed or impaired. Undersized features, heart defects, organ malformation. Gaucher Disease: lacking enzyme to breakdown a fat: enlargement of organs, demineralization of bones. Hemophilia: excessive bleeding, even after minor injury Huntington’s Chorea: (Huntington’s disease) – deterioration of intellect, spastic body movements Klinefelter Syndrome: male with feminine characteristics, sterile Marfan Syndrome: tall, slender, loose-jointed, long and narrow face (Abraham Lincoln?) Moebius Syndrome: facial paralysis, cannot smile or frown Muscular Dystrophy: progressive wasting of muscle cells. Fatal. Neurofibromatosis: tumors grow on nerves as well as on and under skin Osteogensesis Imprefecta: brittle bones – break easily. Phenylketonuria (PKU): baby loses interest in surrounding, mental retardation, irritable, seizures. Polydactyly: extra fingers / toes Porphyria: buildup of chemicals that can cause skin and liver issues. Ex. Sensitivity to sunlight. (stick to genetic forms, you might need to pick one type as a focus) Sickle Cell Anemia: red blood cells are misshapen, attacks of pain. Spina Bifida: opening in spine. Can become paralyzed or need braces to walk. Tay Sachs: baby will become blind, paralyzed & unaware. Fatal. Thalassemia: babies are listless, fussy and get sick easily. Bones become brittle and distorted. Turner Syndrome: females are short, sterile, fail to develop secondary sexual characteristics. How is disorder inherited (recessive/dominant OR whole chromosome) Symptoms of disorder easily described Explanation of treatments is clear Description of cures (if possible) Genetic testing / methods to detect disorder Chromosome location (if known) Effects on person with disorder Some ADDITIONAL information A famous person/people with disorder Source citation page: Proper format (MLA style) Example: Okuda, Michael, and Denise Okuda.
