Transcript
One of the projects my students love has to do with genetic disorders/ gene sequencing. They
are required to pick an approved genetic disorders or DNA sequencing problems. I typically use
this project for Integrated Science 3. They spend time in the library making a group PowerPoint
which includes the name and description of their disorder, cause of the disorder, treatments and
visual aids. They are required to do an essay write up on their own as well.
I have attached a copy of the handout that is given to them with the specifics and guidelines of
the project

DNA and Genes Project
Objectives: to become and expert on a genetic disorder resulting from mutation or any
genetic sequencing problem.
Power point Presentation/ oral presentation (50 points):
Information from at least three sources: may include internet, books magazines or
newspaper articles. Only ONE internet source is allowed! Sources must be cited
http://genomics.energy.gov/ , and
http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/units/disorders/whataregd/ are both acceptable internet
sources.
Written report (50 points):
Each group member MUST have a one page (single spaced) or two page (double
spaced) written summary of the findings with all sources cited. Font no bigger than 12!
No plagiarism! Everything must be in your own word otherwise you cite it! Report must
have a title page with your name and date on it.
Written report and Group Presentation should include:
1. Name and Description of disorder (approved by me first).
a. history of the disorder
i. when it was first researched
ii. who it is most commonly found in (could be ethnic backgrounds,
young or old).
b. symptoms
c. results of disorder (death, blindness etc.)
2. Cause of disorder/disease
a. Type of inheritance (sex-linked, genes etc.)
b. Chromosome number affected
c. Type of mutation (extra chromosome duplication of gene, deletion etc.)
3. Treatment
a. prevention
b. cures
c. for present and future
4. Visual aids; pictures, videos etc.
