Founder and Executive Chairman, Ivanhoe Mines
Country
USA
Career history:
For more than 25 years, international financier Robert Friedland has been a recognized figure among the
leaders of the global financial sector and mineral resource industries. He is credited with key leadership
roles in several world-scale mineral discoveries and mine development projects, and with having guided
strategic exploration and investment decisions that have successfully contributed to significant economic
growth in established and emerging markets in Asia, the Asia Pacific Region, Sub-Saharan Africa and
the Americas.
He is Executive Chairman and a director of Ivanhoe Mines, formerly known as Ivanplats until its adoption
of the Ivanhoe name in August 2013. Today, Ivanhoe Mines is continuing to advance its three major
projects in Sub-Saharan Africa: 1) Mine construction at its Platreef Discovery of platinum, palladium, gold,
nickel and copper in South Africa; 2) planning with joint-venture partner Zijin Mining for the development
of Ivanhoe’s Kamoa and Kakula high-grade copper discoveries in the Democratic Republic of Congo;
and 3) the ongoing upgrading and associated exploration of the historic Kipushi copper-zinc mine, also in
the D.R. Congo.
In January 2016, Mr. Friedland was inducted into the Toronto-based Canadian Mining Hall of Fame for
notable company-building and exploration achievements during his career in the international mining
industry. The induction citation, declaring him “a dynamic, transformative force” in world mining, capped
a succession of international recognitions bestowed during the past 20 years.
Mr. Friedland is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ivanhoe Capital Corporation, his
family’s private company headquartered in Singapore that specializes in the provision of venture capital
and project financing for international business enterprises, predominantly in the fields of minerals and
advanced technology.
Mr. Friedland is also the Chairman and co-founder of I-Pulse, a privately-held company commercializing
new electrical methods to achieve disruptive outcomes across many industries. I-Pulse’s proprietary core
technology compresses small packets of electrical energy to release them in billionths of a second,
obtaining extremely high power discharges at near zero marginal cost. These discharges can be
harnessed to generate powerful and precise shockwaves to treat oil-producing wells, to generate
electrical fields that reveal chargeable or resistive mineral bodies or liquid reservoirs at depth, to shape
and assemble metals to a degree of precision never before achieved, and to crush mineral or gemstonebearing rock with significant reductions in energy requirements. I-Pulse is leading an energy revolution
and entering new markets as its technology continues to demonstrate applicability in an ever-growing
number of industries.

Career history:
Mr. Friedland also is Co-Chairman of CleanTeq, a ASX listed company known for its unique CleaniX(r) Continuous Ion Exchange platform technology providing innovative and sustainable solutions
for metals recovery and water treatment. CleanTeq’s flagship Syerston project is the largest single
source for Scandium. Only 0.1-0.3 percent addition of Scandium into aluminum greatly enhances the
formability of an aluminum alloy, making it far stronger and lighter. The Syerston project also is one
of the largest sources of NiSO4 and CoSO4 — important materials for NCA/NCM-based lithium
batteries for electric vehicles.
Mr. Friedland also has established a motion picture and television financing and production company
based in Hollywood, California, with offices in Beijing and New York, which was launched in
September 2013. Ivanhoe Pictures, chaired by Mr. Friedland, finances and produces film and
television projects that have broad appeal to a global audience.
Mr. Friedland also founded the original Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. in 1994, which he then proceeded to lead
as Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer through 18 years of exploration and mining
ventures in Asia and Asia Pacific, including the discovery of the Oyu Tolgoi chain of deposits in
Mongolia and initial development of the copper-gold-silver mining complex. The company changed
its name to Turquoise Hill Resources in 2012 after Rio Tinto acquired a controlling interest.
Concurrently from May 2009 to January 2011, Mr. Friedland was Chairman of Potash One while it
was planning the development of a new mine in central Canada.
In 2012, Mr. Friedland was recognized as Mining Personality of the Year at the Asia Mining Awards,
sponsored by the Mines & Money conference and the Asia Mining Club in Hong Kong, which cited
his role in Mongolia’s emergence as a major destination for mining investment. In 2011, Mr.
Friedland received the Dealmaker of the Year award for the original Ivanhoe Mines from Australia’s
Diggers and Dealers Mining Forum. In 2002 and 2003, the Mongolian government’s Foreign
Investment and Foreign Trade Agency recognized Mr. Friedland with consecutive Investor Envoy of
the Year awards. In 1996, after helping to guide the delineation of the Voisey’s Bay nickel deposit in
Eastern Canada by Diamond Fields Resources, and while leading negotiations for the sale of the
project, he was named Developer of the Year by the Prospectors and Developers Association of
Canada for his work in establishing and financing mineral exploration and development companies
around the world.
Mr. Friedland holds an undergraduate degree in political science from Reed College, Oregon, USA.
