Principles of Data Mining. (2001) David Hand, Heikki Mannila, and Padhraic Smyth.
MIT Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts. ISN 0-262-08290-X
Data mining is the science of extracting useful information from large data sets. It is
a relatively new discipline, lying at the intersection of statistics, machine learning,
database technology, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, and other areas.
This book gives a technical introduction to the ideas, methods, and tools of data
mining. It is suitable for advanced undergraduate students or graduate students, as
well as for researchers and practitioners who wish to gain a better understanding of
the theory and methods of data mining. A familiarity with basic concepts of
probability, calculus, linear algebra, and optimization is assumed.
