Ori Meirovitch November 20, 2014 Four Layers of Earth Earth has four layers. One is called the crust, another one is the mantle, and another one is the outer core, the last one is the inner core. Scientists think they know what is in Earth’s layers. They found out by studying seismic waves recorded seismographs during earthquakes. One of the layers is called the crust. The crust is the outermost layer. It is the layer we live on. The crust is the thinnest layer out of all four of the layers. It is also completely solid. Another characteristic is that the crust is thinner under water than under land. The second layer is the mantle. The mantle is part liquid part solid. The liquid part is farther from the crust. The solid part is colder and is closer to the crust. No one has ever dug down to the mantle. Under the mantle is the outer core. The outer core is completely molten. It is the only completely molten layer. The outer core is probably made of molten iron. The reason it is probably iron is because scientists don’t know for sure. The last layer is the inner core. The inner core is a circular ball. It is completely solid because of its mass. It is at the center of the Earth. The Inner Core is made of iron Scientists would want to find out more about the inside of the Earth. They don’t know because we don’t have the technology. In the future we probably will have the technology.
