Mason Zuber 11/26/2014 Layers of Earth Amazingly Earth is made up of four layers. There is the crust, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core. Scientists use seismographs to measure and record energy of earthquakes vibrations. This helps them understand what is inside the Earth. The crust is where we live. Its Earth’s thinnest layer and it’s made up of solid rock. The crust has grass dirt, and hard rock. It’s also thicker under continents than the oceans. The crust is also the outermost layer. Below the crust is the mantle. This is the thickest layer. Rocks can move or flow due to pressure and high temperatures. The mantle is partially molten. There is magnesium, iron, and also oxygen. The next layer is the outer core and it is a totally liquid layer. This layer is made of molten iron and nickel. The inner core floats inside the outer core. The Earth’s center is called the inner core. It is a solid sphere. The inner core spins at different rate than the rest of the earth. It’s hard to imagine that the inside of Earth is so different from the outside when looking at Earth from space, but each of the layers are very diverse.
