Jianna Tameta October 30, 2014 The Earth’s Layers There are four layers of the Earth. They are the crust, mantle, outer core, and the inner core. Scientists study earthquakes to find out what the inside of the Earth looks like. Scientists use a tool called a seismograph to study earthquakes. The first outer most layer is the crust, it’s Earth’s thinnest layer. It’s made of solid rock. The crust is deeper under continents than under oceans. This layer of earth is crucial because it’s the place we inhabit! The layer of rock below the crust is the mantle. High temperatures and a lot of pressure is inside the mantle. The mantle is Earth’s thickest layer. It’s made of silicon, magnesium, iron and oxygen. The third layer of Earth is the outer core. The outer core is scalding hot, and it’s most likely made of melted iron. This is the layer closest to the inner core. The last layer of Earth is the inner core, and it’s the hottest layer. The inner core is a solid sphere of material in the center of the earth. Again Scientists (also known as seismologists) study earthquakes so they know what the inside of the Earth is like. As I had said before the layers of the Earth are different and special in many different ways.
