Steps to deciding what type of sentence you have.

Find any BABY A and FANBOYS words in the sentence (star).
Cross out any PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES.
Circle the SUBJECT(S) and box the VERB(S).
Identify which types of clauses are present in the sentences.
 INDEPENENT (underline) or DEPENDENT (double underline)?
5. Count your clauses – decide which type of sentence you have.
 SIMPLE (highlight yellow)
 COMPOUND (highlight pink)
 COMPLEX (highlight blue)
 COMPOUND-COMPLEX (highlight green)
Prepositional Phrases:
 A prepositional phrase will have a preposition
and will end with an object of the preposition.
 The object will always be a noun or a pronoun.
Subjects and Verbs:
 A subject is what the sentence is about.
 A verb is a word that shows the action or state
of being of the subject.
PRACTICE: Cross out prepositional phrases. Circle the subjects and box the verbs in the sentences below:
o Thanksgiving is a time of appreciation for the lives that we have.
o We are blessed to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave.
o When we realize how lucky we are, it is easy to bless others with what we have.
o Remember, we should help those in need.
Phrases and Clauses:
 A phrase does not contain both a subject and a verb.
 A clause has both a subject and a verb.
 Write P for phrase or C for clause on the line:

Independent and Dependent Clauses:
 An independent clause expresses a complete thought and can stand by itself as a sentence.
 A dependent clause must have a BABY A word at the beginning of the clause.
 BABY A words are also known by two other names: dependent marker word an subordinate conjunctions
Directions: In the space before each group of words, mark P if it is a phrase, D if it is a dependent clause and I if it
is an independent clause.

Sentence Types—Here are the rules:
Simple Sentences:
 Have one independent clause
 HINT: Single individual; can survive alone
Compound Sentences:
 Have two independent



Will have FANBOYS word(s)
HINT: Two independents coming together and
are having to “fan” it out when they get
angry.
Complex Sentences:
 Have one independent clause and one or more
dependent clauses
 Will have a Baby A word
 HINT: Single parent taking care of
dependent(s)
Compound-Complex Sentences:
 Have two independent clauses and one more
dependent clauses
 Will have Baby A word and FANBOYS
word(s)
 HINT: Married parents (two independents)
taking care of dependent(s)
