1. Propaganda: method of spreading ideas,
information or rumors for the purpose of
helping or hurting a person, cause, or
institution.
2. Symbolism: technique of using images or
pictures to convey a certain message
Examples of symbolism: dove or peace sign to represent
peace; Statue of Liberty to represent freedom; White House
to represent U.S. government
Card Stacking: shows a product or person’s best features while
leaving out negative information
Glittering Generalities: uses few words or short phrases
to appeal to emotions
Plain Folks: uses ordinary language to convey to the
audience that the person is just like everyone else
Bandwagon: to make the viewer feel like everyone is using
the product or voting for the candidate so they should too.
Name Calling: to send a negative message about an
opposing product or candidate
Transfer: uses symbols to convey a message
Testimonial: celebrity or well-known person speaks for
a product or person as an endorsement
