• English uses three ways to express
actions in the past
– I have played
– I did play
– I played
• In French the past tense is only
expressed in one way but it can mean all
three things!

• The two helping verbs use in French are
avoir and être
• The most common of the two helping verbs
used in French is Avoir and avoir is what
we will be practicing first
– MAKE SURE TO CONJUGATE THE VERB IN

Past Participle: ER verbs
• ER verbs are
– Verbs that end in ER
– EXAMPLE: Parler
• To form the past participle (this is not a
conjugation) of regular ER verbs:
– Remove the ER and add é
– EXAMPLE: Parler -> Parlé in the passé composé
EXAMPLES OF REGULAR

• J’ai parlé =
– I spoke, I have spoken, I did speak
• Nous avons parlé =
– We spoke, We have spoken, We did
speak
• Ils ont parlé =

HELPFUL VOCABULARY
• Here is some useful vocabulary to use
when talking in the Passé Composé
– Hier = yesterday / hier soir = last night
– L’année passé = last year
– Lundi/Mardi/Mercredi/Jeudi/Vendredi/
Samedi/Dimanche dernier = last Monday
etc.
– La semaine passé = last week
IRREGULAR VERBS
• An irregular verb is:
– A verb that does not follow the regular
conjugation rules
– Example: etre
• If a verb is irregular in the present
tense then it most likely has an
irregular past participle
– Example: etre -> été not etu!
