PASSÉ COMPOSÉ AVEC AVOIR PASSÉ COMPOSÉ • English uses three ways to express actions in the past – I have played – I did play – I played • In French the past tense is only expressed in one way but it can mean all three things! PASSÉ COMPOSÉ FORMULA Helping Verb + Past Participle of Main Verb = Passé Composé PASSÉ COMPOSÉ FORMULA • The two helping verbs use in French are avoir and être • The most common of the two helping verbs used in French is Avoir and avoir is what we will be practicing first – MAKE SURE TO CONJUGATE THE VERB IN THE PRESENT TENSE! CONJUGATION OF AVOIR • • • • • J’ai Tu as Il a Elle a On a • • • • Nous avons Vous avez Ils ont Elles ont Past Participle: ER verbs • ER verbs are – Verbs that end in ER – EXAMPLE: Parler • To form the past participle (this is not a conjugation) of regular ER verbs: – Remove the ER and add é – EXAMPLE: Parler -> Parlé in the passé composé EXAMPLES OF REGULAR ER VERBS • J’ai parlé = – I spoke, I have spoken, I did speak • Nous avons parlé = – We spoke, We have spoken, We did speak • Ils ont parlé = – They spoke, They have spoken, they did speak NOTE • THE PAST PARTICIPLE WITH AVOIR DOES NOT CHANGE! • NO MATTER WHAT THE SUBJECT IT REMAINS THE SAME!
