An alternate technique for isolation of Toxocara canis excretory-secretory antigens
Provedor de dados: 60
Autores: Colli,Cristiane Maria; Elefant,Guita Rubinsky; Paludo,Marcia Liz; Guilherme,Ana Lúcia Falavigna.
The aim of the present study was to test the effectiveness of a sausage-casing membrane for dialysis of Toxocara
excretory-secretory antigens (TES). The protein concentrated by the tested membrane was compared with that obtained using a
Sigma commercial membrane, as were the protein fractions found by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Standard positive and
negative serum samples were evaluated in an ELISA immunoassay, and equivalent data were obtained in all steps, indicating that
the sausage-casing membrane is efficient, besides being less expensive to process.

Clinical features of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and hepatitis C infection
Provedor de dados: 56
Autores: Greca,L.F.; Pinto,L.C.; Rados,D.R.; Canani,L.H.; Gross,J.L.
The objective of the present cross-sectional study was to assess the prevalence and the clinical and laboratory features of hepatitis
C virus (HCV)-positive patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) attending either an outpatient clinic or hemodialysis units.
Serologic-HCV testing was performed in 489 type 2 DM patients (303 outpatients and 186 on dialysis). A structured assessment
of clinical, laboratory and DM-related complications was performed and the patients were then compared according to HCV
infection status. Mean patient age was 60 years; HCV positivity (HCV+) was observed in 39 of 303 (12.9%) outpatients and in 34
of 186 (18.7%) dialysis patients. Among HCV+ patients, 32 were men (43.8%). HCV+ patients had higher serum levels of
aspartate...

Construction and use of a dialysis chamber for investigating in situ the toxicity of heavy metals on
bacteria.
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Tan, T.
Teflon dialysis sampling chambers have been employed to study the toxicity of ZnCl sub(2) on a cadmium-sensitive bacterium,
Acinetobacter) CS 13, in an aquarium with running seawater. A concentration of 10 mg Zn super(++) l super(-1) did not influence
the cell densities in the chambers, but cell densities decreased at zinc concentrations of 15 and 20 mg l super(-1). In seawater with
20 mg Zn super(++) lu-1 the bacteria accumulated zinc from 827 to 2813 mu g g super(-1) cells dry wt after 1 d. After 2 d the zinc
concentration increased to 4625 mu g g super(-1) dry wt. Three chambers were filled with Acinetobacter CS 13 cells added to
sterile sediment at a concentration of 1 x 10 super(8) cells ml super(-1) wet sediment. To test the security, these chambers...

Cross-transmission of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus in patients undergoing dialysis and kidney
transplant

The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) cross-transmission
between two patient groups (long-term dialysis and kidney transplant patients). Molecular typing, by automated ribotyping with
the RiboPrinter Microbial Characterization System (Qualicon, USA), was used to analyze VRE isolates from 31 fecal samples of
320 dialysis patients and 38 fecal samples of 280 kidney transplant patients. Clonal spread of E. faecalis and E. casseliflavus was
observed intragroup, but not between the two groups of patients. In turn, transmission of E. gallinarum and E. faecium between
the groups was suggested by the finding of vancomycin-resistant isolates belonging to the same ribogroup in both dialysis and...

Cytokine accumulation in osteitis fibrosa of renal osteodystrophy
Provedor de dados: 56
Autores: Duarte,M.E.L.; Carvalho,E.F.; Cruz,E.A.S.; Lucena,S.B.G.; Andress,D.L.
Bone marrow fibrosis occurs in association with a number of pathological states. Despite the extensive fibrosis that sometimes
characterizes renal osteodystrophy, little is known about the factors that contribute to marrow accumulation of fibrous tissue.
Because circulating cytokines are elevated in uremia, possibly in response to elevated parathyroid hormone levels, we have
examined bone biopsies from 21 patients with end-stage renal disease and secondary hyperparathyroidism. Bone sections were
stained with antibodies to human interleukin-1alpha (IL-1alpha), IL-6, IL-11, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and
transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) using an undecalcified plastic embedding method. Intense staining for IL-1alpha, IL-6,
TNF-alpha and TGF-ß...

ENZYMATIC DETERMINATION OF STARCH IN DOCE DE LEITE USING DIALYSIS
Provedor de dados: 116
Autores: DEMIATE,Ivo Motim; KONKEL,Francisco Enéias; PEDROSO,Ricardo Alexandre.
The importance of starch for the food industry makes it necessary to develop new, fast, economic and accurate methodologies for
its quantification. In the present paper starch hydrolysis using commercial enzymes of industrial grade are studied aiming to
develop an easy and cheap analysis, available to a greater number of industries and technicians. The proposed method is simple,
divided in a first step where soluble sugars are eliminated from the samples by using dialysis, followed by starch hydrolysis of the
retained fraction with a thermoresistent bacterial alfa-amylase (Termamyl 120L®) and an amyloglucosidase (AMG 300L®). The
hydrolysis conditions were those suggested by the enzyme producer. After the hydrolysis step the material was dialysed again
for...

Hepatitis C risk factor for patients submitted to dialysis
Provedor de dados: 55
Autores: Baldessar,Maria Zélia; Bettiol,Jane; Foppa,Fabrício; Oliveira,Lúcia Helena das Chagas.
This article reports the results of the research which has evaluated the prevalence and factors associated to the presence of
Hepatitis C in patients submitted to dialysis at the Clinica de Doenças Renais (Clinic of Renal Diseases) in Tubarao city (CRDT),
Santa Catarina State, Brazil, in the period between January 1st, 2004 to December 31st in the same year. The prevalence of 16.8%
of Hepatitis C in the studied population and the time-length of dialysis as significative risk factor have become evident. The
non-correlation of seropositivity of the followings factors is also indicated: age, gender, base diseases, infrastructures, the type of
clinic machines, the type of dialyser, used membranes, the machine sterilisation and substances for this process as...

Renal involvement in leptospirosis: new insights into pathophysiology and treatment
Provedor de dados: 55
Autores: Cerqueira,Thaís Bandeira; Athanazio,Daniel Abensur; Spichler,Anne Stambovsky; Seguro,Antônio Carlos.
Acute renal failure (ARF) is one of the most common complications of leptospirosis although the causal mechanisms are still
unclear. Diverse mechanisms are implicated in leptospiral nephropathy and new data supports the role of peculiar ion transport
defects. Besides antibiotic therapy, ARF management in leptospirosis requires dialytic therapy which is most efficient when
started early. Dialysis is the standard supportive therapy even though recent evidence suggests clinical benefit from alternative
treatments such as plasmapheresis and hemofiltration. Renal recovery is achieved soon after clinical improvement. The
comprehension of the primary mechanisms of renal dysfunction will be helpful in the development of additional therapeutic tools
for improving...
