A new species of Mesoclemmys, from the open formations of northeastern Brazil (Chelonii, Chelidae)
Provedor de dados: 84
Autores: Bour,Roger; Zaher,Hussam.
A new species of South American side-necked turtle is described from the state of Piauí, Brazil. It is related to the Amazonian
species of the genus Mesoclemmys s.l. (new acceptation) and is apparently a biogeographically relictual population of a species
formerly living under a more humid climate in northeastern Brazil.

Atividade de nidificação de Phrynops Hilarii Duméril & Bibron (Testudines, Chelidae) na
Reserva Biológica do Lami, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil
Provedor de dados: 104
Autores: Bujes,Clóvis Souza.
Nesting activity of the neotropical turtle Phrynops hilarii Duméril & Bibron, 1835 was studied from Feb/94 through
Jan/95, with weekly visits at the Lami Biological Reserve (30º15'S, 51º05'W), Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Nesting
behavior was observed 17 times on three different nest sites. Phrynops hilarii laid in average 11 eggs per clutch (10-14; sd±1;
n=17), nests' depth ranged from 100 to 150 mm (x=121.53 mm.sd±12.31; n=17). The species presents stereotiped behaviour
common to other Testudines. Temperature inside the nest, just after nesting, ranged between 20-31ºC (x=26.29ºC; sd±2.89; n=17);
nest predation during this period was 82.35% (14 of 17 nests). From Aug/29 through Oct/03/95, 220 egg shells was collected next
to 21 nests...

Comportamento alimentar e dieta de Phrynops hilarii (Duméril & Bibron) em cativeiro
(Reptilia, Testudines, Chelidae)

Since 1985 the biology and behavior of Phrynops hilarii (Duméril & Bibron, 1835) at São Paulo Zoo is being studied.
Feeding behavior is divided in five phases (foraging, approach, capture, dilaceration and ingestion), but not necessarily all of them
happen. During phase 1 the food or prey seems to be visually located. During phase 2 the food itens and stationaty preys are
approached and examined by olfaction. Moving preys are pursued and there is no olfactory examination. During phase 3 the food
is captured by suction. When food is bigger than turtle mouth it is dilacerated by one or both forefeet used alternately (phase 4).
Ingestion is accomplished by gradual suction (phase 5). Intra and inter-specific cleptoparasitism was observed. Success in...

Ontogenetic variation of plastral spotting pattern in Phrynops hilarii (Testudines, Chelidae)
Provedor de dados: 76
Autores: Cabrera,Mario R.; Colantonio,Sonia E.
The plastral spotting variation in the chelid turtle Phrynops hilarii (Duméril & Bibron, 1835) in relation to sex, size, and
geographic procedence of individuals was analyzed. States for qualitative characters were analyzed using non-parametric tests.
Quantitative characters (shell and scute measurements) were standardized for body size by linear regression against carapace
length, and were subjected to principal components analysis and canonical discriminant function analysis. Results suggest that
increased plastral spotting is a polymorphic ontogenetic trait in P. hilarii. Neither hatchlings nor juveniles have plastral pattern
moderately or heavily pigmented. The simplest pattern, however, may persist without changes in some adults. There are no...

Population Structure of Mesoclemmys vanderhaegei (Bour, 1973) (Testudines:Chelidae) in the
Cerrado of Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, Brazil
Provedor de dados: 49
Autores: Brito,Elizângela Silva de; Strussmann,Christine; Penha,Jerry Magno Ferreira.
Studies on population structure of freshwater turtles belonging to the family Chelidae are scarce in Brazil. Herein we describe the
structure of a population of the chelid Mesoclemmys vanderhaegei in a Cerrado area in the municipality of Chapada dos
Guimarães, Mato Grosso, Brazil. A total of 80 individuals were captured in five collecting sites, from January to March 2007: 42
adult females, 27 adult males, and 11 juveniles with undetermined sex. Among 80 individuals, 24% were recaptured, at least once.
This is the first attempt to estimate the size of a population of Mesoclemmys vanderhaegei. Our results suggest that additional
sampling efforts are needed for more accurate estimates of population structure. Nevertheless, they surely provide minimum
values...

Tortugas continentales (Pleurodira: Chelidae) en la Formación Roca (Daniano), provincia de Río
Negro, Argentina
Provedor de dados: 41
Autores: Bona,Paula; Heredia,Susana; De La Fuente,Marcelo.

Turtles of the Tiputini Biodiversity Station with remarks on the diversity and distribution of the
Testudines from Ecuador
Provedor de dados: 49
Autores: Cisneros-Heredia,Diego F.
Ten species of Testudines, from four different families: Chelidae, Kinosternidae, Podocnemididae, and Testudinidae, are reported
from the Tiputini Biodiversity Station (Universidad San Francisco de Quito), northeastern Amazonian Ecuador; including the
second report from Ecuador of Batrachemys heliostemma. These ten species are sympatric but not completely syntopic, thus I
comment on their diversity and habitat preferences patterns. The general distribution of some turtles from Amazonian Ecuador is
discussed, providing additional records and distribution maps for Chelus fimbriatus, Platemys platycephala, Batrachemys
heliostemma, Batrachemys raniceps, Mesoclemmys gibba, Phrynops geoffroanus, Kinosternon scorpioides, and Geochelone
denticulata. The presence...
