Social Studies Grade 4~ Study Guide Chapter 2: The Natural Regions of Pennsylvania Chapter Vocabulary Region A large area in which places have something in common, such as natural resources or landforms. Transportation A way to move people and goods. Suburb Small communities near a city. Merchant Someone who buys and sells goods for profit. Piedmont “Foot of the mountain.” Plateau A large area of high, almost level land. Canal Human-made waterway dug across land. Ridge A line of mountains or hills. Erosion The slow wearing away of soil and stone by wind and water. Cavern Underground cave Mineral Material obtained by mining, such as coal or gold. Evaporate Change from a liquid to a gas Deep Mining The type of mining in which miners tunnel into the Earth to remove coal Surface Mining The type of coal mining in which miners remove coal that lies near the surface Port A harbor or place where ships can load and unload cargo and be safe from storms. Peninsula A piece of land almost completely surrounded by water, or extending far out into the water. Be able to match these characteristics about each region of PA with the correct region. I will have them listed on the test. You will need to write the name of the region above them. Atlantic Coastal Region -narrow strip of low land in southeastern PA. -Philadelphia is located here. -the fall line in located here. The Piedmont -fertile farming ground. -plateau of gentle rolling hills and valleys The Ridge and Valley Region -covers a large part of central PA. -includes the Great Valley, a large region of rich farmland. -the state capital, Harrisburg, is located in this region. The Allegheny Plateau Region -covers most of PA. -formed from glaciers during the last ice age. -Pittsburg and Sullivan County belong to this region.
