Abstract noun
a noon used to describe a quality, idea, or experience rather than something physical or concrete:
e.g. joy, size, language. Compare with concrete noun.
Active
In an active clause or active sentence, the grammatical subject is the person or thing that
performs the action given in the verb (e.g. Geoff wrote the book). Compare PASSIVE.
Adjective
A word that describes a noun (e.g. an interesting book) or a pronoun (e.g. a big one). Gradable
adjectives can be used to say that a person or thing has more or less of this quality (e.g. She's
very happy), while ungradable adjectives can't (e.g. It's impossible. We can't say '...very
impossible'). Classifying adjectives say that something is of a particular type (e.g. atomic,
initial). Emphasizing adjectives stress how strongly we feel about something (e.g. utter
nonsense).
ADSL
an acronym for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, ADSL is a method of transmitting data over
traditional copper telephone lines at speeds higher than were previously possible.
Agent
The person or thing that performs the action described in a verb. Usually it is the subject in an
active clause and comes after 'by...' in a passive clause.
Applet
an applet is a small software application, typically in the Java programming language.
ARPANET
Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. It was a network developed in the late 1960’s
and early 1970’s by the U.S. Department of Defense. As an experiment in wide area
networking (WAN), ARPANet was developed with the goal of being robust enough to
survive a nuclear war.
Backbone
is a high-speed line or series of connections that forms a major pathway within a network.
Bandwidth
is the maximum amount of data that can travel a communications path in a given time,
usually measured in seconds.
Barium
Ba (d) used as a contrast when taking X-ray photographs of soft tissue

BBS
This is the acronym for Bulletin Board System, a system that lets people read each other's
messages and post new ones.
Blog
Short for web log; usually a chronological record of thoughts, links, events, or actions posted
on the web. For examples, see the Yahoo Directory of Weblogs.
Broadband
When the bandwidth of a signal is large, it can simultaneously carry many channels of
information. Fiber optic cable, in particular, has a very high bandwidth, and is referred to as
broadband.
Browser
A browser is a software program that allows you to view and interact with various kinds of
Internet resources available on the World Wide Web. A browser is commonly called a web
browser.
Calcium
Ca (p) metallic element which is the major component of bones and teeth
Carbon
C (i) one of the common non-metallic elements which is an essential component of living
matter and organic chemical compounds
Chlorine
Cl (q) powerful greenish gas, used to sterilise water
Client
A client is a program that uses the services of another program. The client program is used to
contact and obtain data or request a service from the server.
Cobalt
Co (f) metallic element which is the basis of a radioactive isotope used to treat cancer
Comparative
an adjective or adverb with '-er' on the end or 'more' in front of it; e.g. friendlier, more important,
more carefully.
Cookie
A cookie is a file sent to a web browser by a web server that is used to record one's activities
on a website. For instance, when you buy items from a site and place them in a so-called
virtual shopping cart, that information is stored in the cookie.
Cryptography
The process of securing private information that is passed through public networks by
mathematically scrambling (encrypting) it in a way that makes it unreadable to anyone
except the person or persons holding the mathematical "key" that can unscramble (decrypt)
it.

CSS
stands for Cascading Style Sheets. It is a technique built into version 4.0 and later browsers
that support styles for pages. For example, you can set up styles for fonts and page layouts
that will apply automatically to pages developed under a particular style you develop.
Database
A database is a structured format for organizing and maintaining information that can be
easily retrieved. A simple example of a database is a table or a spreadsheet.
Directory
A directory is a system that your computer uses to organize files on the basis of specific
information. Directories can be organized hierarchically so that files appear in a number of
different ways, such as the order in which they were created, alphabetically by name or by
type, and other ways.
Discoverer of something is the person who finds it or becomes aware of it for the first time
by discovering it or by making a discovery. A discovery may be described as a breakthrough.
People may say that it is groundbreaking or that it breaks new ground.
Dynamic verb
A verb that describes an action (e.g. walk, throw). Compare STATE VERB.
Encryption
A way of coding the information in a file or e-mail message so that if it is intercepted by a
third party as it travels over a network it cannot be read. Only the person or persons that have
the right type of decoding software can unscramble the message.
Experiments are scientific tests that are carried out, conducted, done, or performed to see
what happens to something in particular conditions.
Field experiment is one done in real surroundings and not in a laboratory.
Firewall
A firewall is a combination hardware and software buffer that many companies or
organizations have in place between their internal networks and the Internet. A firewall
allows only specific kinds of messages from the Internet to flow in and out of the internal
network.
Formula is a series of mathematical, chemical, or other symbols that express a scientific
rule.
Gateway
A gateway refers to hardware or software that bridges the gap between two otherwise
incompatible applications or networks so that data can be transferred among different
computers.
Gold, Au (r) soft yellow-coloured precious metal, used as a compound in various drugs, and
sometimes as a filling for teeth
Gopher is a text-based internet search engine developed by the University of Minnesota.

HCI, hydrochloric acid, (a) acid found in the gastric juices which helps to break apart the
food
HCN, hydrocyanic acid, (b) acid which forms cyanide
Helium, He (m) very light gas used in combination with oxygen, especially to relieve asthma
or sickness caused by decompression
Host
A host is any computer directly connected to a network that acts as a repository for services
(such as e-mail, Usenet newsgroups, FTP, or World Wide Web) available for other
computers on the network.
Hydrogen, H (k) gas which combines with oxygen to form water
Innovation is the act of thinking of new ideas, developments, and improvements. These are
innovations and the people innovating them are innovators. The related adjective is
innovative.
Internet Service Provider
Also called an ISP or access providers, Internet service providers refers to the remote
computer system to which you connect your personal computer and through which you
connect to the Internet.
Invention or inventiveness is the ability to design new machines, devices, or products. An
invention is a new machine, device, or product. People who invent things are inventors. The
related adjective is inventive.
Iron, Fe (j) an essential part of the red pigment in blood cells, found in liver and eggs
is a software utility for finding files stored on FTP servers, Archie is a system for locating
files on the Internet.
Laboratory bench is a table used for conducting experiments.
Lead, Pb (l) heavy soft metallic element which is poisonous in compounds
N2 O, nitrous oxide, (g) colourless gas with a sweet smell, used in combination with other
gases as an anaesthetic in dentistry and surgery
Nicotine, C 10 H14 N2 , (c) main alkaloid substance found in tobacco
Nitrogen, N (o) gas which is the main component of air and an essential part of protein
Object The person or thing affected by the action of the verb or that is involved in the result of
the action (e.g. I put the book back on the shelf). Compare SUBJECT.
Oxygen, O (h) colourless gas which is present in air and essential to human life

Passive
In a passive clause or passive sentence, the grammatical subject is the person or thing that
experiences the effect of the action given in the verb (e.g. The book was written by Geoff.).
Compare ACTIVE.
Performative verb
A verb which states the action that is performed when a speaker uses the verb (e.g. I promise
I'll do it tomorrow; I apologise).
Phase a structure in which you use two verbs in a clause in order to talk about two processes or
events that are closely linked. e.g. She helped to clean the house... They remember buying the
tickets.
Phrasal verb a combination of a verb and an adverb and/or a preposition, which have a single
meaning; e.g. back down, hand over, look forward to.
Pioneers are scientists who are the first to do work in a principal area. They are said to
pioneer particular developments or do pioneering work in a particular area.
Plural noun a noun which is only used in the plural form; e.g. trousers, scissors, vermin.
Plural the form used to refer to more than one person or thing; e.g. dogs, women.
Possessive
The possessive form of a noun ends in either -'s (e.g. Mark's car) or -s' (e.g. the girls' changing
room).
Preposition
A word such as in, on, by that comes before a noun, pronoun, noun phrase or -ing form (e.g. in
March, above my uncle's head, by investing).
Prepositional phrase
A group of words that consists of a preposition and its prepositional object (a noun, pronoun,
noun phrase or -ing form) (e.g. behind our house, across it).
Productive feature
A grammatical point which can be applied to an open class of words. See the introduction for more
details.
Prototype
The first, experimental, versions of a new technological idea (e.g. a prototype version).
Quantifier A word or phrase that goes before a noun or noun phrase to talk about the quantity
of something (e.g. a little water, many of the women in the room).
Researchers
People trying to find facts about something, study it or do research in it, into it.
Science is the study of the nature and behavior of natural things and knowledge obtained
about them.

A sentence consisting of one clause.

State verb
A verb that is used to describe a state (e.g. believe, think) rather than an action. Compare
DYNAMIC VERB.
Subject
The person or thing that does the action of the verb (e.g. Tommy went home). Compare OBJECT.
Subjunctive
The subjunctive is a set of verb forms used, mainly in rather formal English, to talk about
possibilities rather than facts (e.g. We recommend that he be given the job; If I were you, I'd
go home now).
Sub-modifier
An adverb which is used in front of an adjective or another adverb in order to strengthen or weaken
its meaning; e.g. ...very interesting... ...quite quickly.
Sulphur, S (t) yellow non-metallic element found in some amino acids
Technological describes things relating to technology.
Technologists are researchers who work in a particular area of technology.
Technology describes scientific knowledge applied for practical purposes.
Test tube is a small tube-shaped container used in experiments.
Theoretical description is model of a phenomenon, system, or process is a theoretical
description of it, designed to aid understanding of how it works.
Theory is an idea or set of ideas designed to explain something. The related adjective is
theoretical. People who produce and work on theories are theorists or theoreticians.
Thought experiment is done by thinking about a problem, rather than experimenting on it.

Transitive verb
A verb that takes an object (e.g. She was holding a bunch of flowers.). Compare
INTRANSITIVE VERB.
