SAMPLE INTRODUCTION/ CHARACTER ESSAY
1. HOOKWhat does mental illness look like (rhetorical question)? Can we look
at someone and tell, or can symptoms be masked by medicine and other
treatments (rhetorical question)? According to the National Institute of
Mental Health, an estimated 57.7 million people per year suffer from mental
illness in America (statistics).
2. SPECIFIC INFORMATION FROM STORYIn “Mrs. T’s Story” by Krishna Padmasola, the protagonist, Mrs. T., is
suffering from a mental illness that makes her see, hear, and do strange
things. It gives her headaches and leads her to life in a mental facility.
3. THESIS- NAMING OF THE THREE CHARACTER TRAITS TO BE

Because of her mental illness, Mrs. T. is paranoid, lonely, and irritated.
