Task # ____1204_(BASIC CLINICAL SKILLS)__
Task: Accurately measure and record radial and apical pulse.
Purpose: Health care workers must understand and demonstrate knowledge and ability to
assess a patient in order to function as an effective member of the health care team. Vital
signs are major indications of body function. The health care worker must use precise
methods to measure and record pulse so results are accurate.
Prerequisite Tasks: Effective communication, body mechanics, handwashing standard
precautions, basic math.
Performance Objective: Given an actual patient situation in the clinical environment
and the proper tools, the student will measure and record radial and apical pulse with
100% accuracy.
Safety Factors: Using proper body mechanics to prevent injury to self and patient;
following infection control practices (handwashing and PPE); using standard precautions
and proper use of equipment while performing any health care skills.
