Theme 3 will be examined in the SDME only Theme 3: Tectonic Hazards - Volcanoes Do not understand Nearly confident Fully understood Do not understand Nearly confident Fully understood I know the global distribution of volcanoes I know how the movement of tectonic plates can cause volcanoes I know how natural processes may affect the global distribution of volcanoes I know the primary and secondary effects of volcanoes I know why people continue to live in areas affected by volcanoes I know how we can use new technology to predict volcanoes I know how we can attempt to reduce the impact of volcanic eruptions (including building, planning and education). I know the sustainability of these methods in terms of cost, environmental impact and effects on people at risk. I know that the level of development, settlement and economic activity will affect the impact and responses. Case study: I know about a volcanic event in a LEDC (Merapi in Indonesia) Theme 3: Tectonic Hazards - Earthquakes I know the global distribution of earthquakes I know how the movement of tectonic plates can cause earthquakes I know how natural processes may affect the global distribution of earthquakes I know the primary and secondary effects of earthquakes I know why people continue to live in areas affected by earthquakes I know how we can use new technology to predict earthquakes I know how we can attempt to reduce the impact of earthquakes (including building, planning and education). I know the sustainability of these methods in terms of cost, environmental impact and effects on people at risk. I know that the level of development, settlement and economic activity will affect the impact and responses. Case study: I know about an earthquake event in a MEDC (Tohoku tsunami in Japan or Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand). Theme 3: Climatic Hazards - drought Do not understand Nearly confident Fully understood Do not understand Nearly confident Fully understood I know the global distribution of severe drought I understand the climatic conditions causing periods of drought I know how natural processes may affect the global distribution of drought I know the primary and secondary effects of drought I know why people continue to live in areas affected by drought I know how we can use new technology to predict drought I know how we can attempt to reduce the impact of drought (including building, planning and education). I know the sustainability of these methods in terms of cost, environmental impact and effects on people at risk. I know that the level of development, settlement and economic activity will affect the impact and responses. Case study: I know about one climatic hazard in a MEDC (Drought in Australia). Theme 3: Climatic Hazards - tropical storms I know the global distribution of tropical storms I know the climatic conditions that allow tropical storms to develop I know how natural processes may affect the global distribution of tropical storms I know the primary and secondary effects of tropical storms I know why people continue to live in areas affected by tropical storms I know how we can use new technology to predict tropical storms I know how we can attempt to reduce the impact of tropical storms (including building, planning and education). I know the sustainability of these methods in terms of cost, environmental impact and effects on people at risk. I know that LEDCs have less developed warning systems and their response systems are more limited Case study: I know about one climatic hazard in an LEDC (Cyclones in Bangladesh or typhoon Haiyun in Philippines) For each case study you should include: 1. Data e.g. the numbers of deaths, displaced people, cost of damage and eye-witness accounts. 2. How the settlement and economic activities (including level of development) affect the impact 3. The responses to the hazard and the sustainability of that response.
