GL BAL HIST RY Keep in your binder Course Outline for Mrs. Agosta Global Studies 9 is the first year of a two-year World History course required by New York State. At the end of 9th grade, students will take a district-wide final exam and at the end of 10th grade students will take a cumulative Regents Exam that includes everything from this year and next year! Below is a brief outline of the topics we will be covering in Global 9. I. The French Revolution Grading: Homework= 20% Classwork= 20% (Including class participation, assignments, and being prepared for class.) Tests, quizzes= 30% Projects- 30% Homework and Classwork: 1. Homework is usually due once a week on Tuesdays. There are NO excuses to NOT know what your homework is. You will be given a monthly homework calendar, extra copies are in the “Absent Folders” in class, homework is written on the board and they are posted online. Homework must always be completed in complete sentences unless otherwise specified. 2. Late policy: Late work will be accepted ONE day late for half credit. It will not be accepted after one day late. Incomplete work will not be graded. 3. Classwork not completed in class must be completed for homework due the next day. 4. If you are absent, homework will be due when you return. Tests and quizzes will be given on the day you return. Failure to take tests and quizzes can result in a zero. You are responsible to get work that you missed. The best place to look for missed work and notes is on my website. Handouts and classwork are available in the “Absent Folders” in class too or get notes from a trusted classmate. Use these resources and if you still have questions, then come and see me. Extended absences will be discussed with the teacher. 5. Grading Scale: Homework is graded on a scale of 10. You can receive from a 11/10 for “over the top” work down to a 4/10 for awful work. For example: 11/10 = superior 8/10 = satisfactory 4/10 = awful 10/10 = excellent 6/10 = unsatisfactory 0/10 = not handed in Supplies Required: 1. Binder, paper or notebook, pens, pencils (Suggested: Highlighter, Colored Pencils) 2. Do NOT ask me for a writing utensil. As a high school student, you are expected to have one everyday, without exception. 3. Your Binder should have sections for: Class notes and handouts, Homework packets, Graded work (tests, quizzes, projects). If you prefer, you may keep your binder organized in chronological order of topics instead. Online Component: It is important that all students understand there is an online component to Global 9. In addition to the many group projects that we complete using online resources, our textbook for this course is Prentice Hall’s World History. Each student will be given a login so that you can access the online textbook. It is the same information as in the hardcover book but in an easy to navigate online format. Alternatively, you can request to be given a book that you can keep at home but you will be responsible for returning the text in proper condition at the end of the year. Planning ahead may be necessary if you do not have access to the internet at home. The RCK Library & Computer Labs allow students to work online during free periods and after school. Local libraries also offer free internet access. In addition, most of what we do in class is also posted on my teacher website. Students are strongly encouraged to use my website to go back over classnotes, print out extra homework/classwork assignments and get materials missed in case of absence. Organization: 1. Save your work! It is proof that you completed assignments (This is helpful if I make mistakes in the grade book!) and you will also need it to study for cumulative tests and quizzes throughout the year, the final exam and for your Regent exam at the end of 10 th grade. 2. Periodically, you will need to “clean out” your binder. Do NOT throw out all your papers! Keep notes and helpful materials from past units in a folder at home to keep for the end of the year and for 10th grade review next year! Please make it a point to regularly check my teacher website for homework calendars, assignments, upcoming projects, and other announcements. Students CANNOT use the excuse that they do not know what their homework is because it is posted online, homework calendars are given in class and the assignments are always written on the board in class. Please also note that there is an online component to this class as group projects and the textbook is online. This year during Global Studies, we will use some films and videos to help aid in learning. Most of these will be from Disney, the History Channel or National Geographic, however students may also watch the following films (some clips or occasionally in its entirety).
