MINI-LESSON/MODELLING: 15 min Students will work in partners doing a jig saw lesson Procedure for Jig Saw Lesson 1. The teacher will distribute two different readings: 1 and 2 on Astronomy. Finish worksheet Reading One When you look up at the sky you notice that some stars seem brighter than others. Most stars seem like small points of light because they are very far away but some of these points seem brighter than others. This is because of two factors; distance and size. Sometimes the dimmer stars are actually bigger but are just farther away. A star that is dim can appear bright in the sky if it is close to Earth and a star that is actually very bright can appear dim if it is very far away. Perception also impacts how we view the moon and sun. In the sky, the moon and sun appear to be the same size but ACTUALLY the moon is much smaller. The moon is much closer to the Earth than the sun and therefore it SEEMS that the moon and sun are about the same size. We perceive the moon and sun to be the same size when actually the moon is much smaller. The sun is actually a HUGE: It is about 110 times the size of Earth. The sun is about 400 times the size of the moon. Stars are always much bigger than planets or moons. Reading Two Because Space is so vast, a special unit of measure is needed to record distances. Distances between stars and galaxies are measured in light-years. A light-year is the distance that light travels in one year. Light travels at 300,000 km/s, or about 9.5 trillion km in one year. The nearest star to Earth, other than the sun, is Proxima Centauri. Proxima Centauri is 4.3 light-years away, or about 40 trillion km. It is important to note that all stars and planets are HUGE they are just LIGHT YEARS away and therefore SEEM small when we look at them in the sky. DO NOW 1. What is our bathroom policy? 2.
