Propaganda Techniques
Bandwagon - Bandwagon appeals attempt to persuade the target
audience to join in and take the course of action that "everyone else is
taking."
Plain Folks – The plain folks technique uses average people to sell
products by making consumers feel like the product is something that
appeals to the average person.
Snob Appeal – Snob appeal associates a product with wealth, power, or
membership in an elite group. It appeals to a person’s desire to be
special, wealthy, or important.
Testimonial – Testimonial uses famous people to promote products. It
is effective because the admiration for such a person is transferred to
the product being sold.
Transfer – Ads that use transfer try to get consumers to feel the same
way about a product that they feel about another person, place, or
thing. The advertisement in which it is used attempts to transfer
emotions from something to the product being sold.
Glittering Generalities – Glittering generalities are emotionally
appealing words applied to a product or idea, which have no real
meaning.
Name Calling – Name calling is used to make on product or person look
good by pointing out how another product or person is bad or wrong.
Stereotypes – Stereotypes refer to members of a group as if they were
all the same. This technique attempts to arouse prejudices in an
audience by labeling the object of the propaganda campaign as
something the target audience fears, hates, loathes, or finds
undesirable.
Slogan – A slogan is a brief, catchy, phrase, sometimes accompanied by
music. It’s effective because it’s easy to remember and sometimes
difficult to forget.
Repetition - This type of propaganda often deals with a slogan or
image that is repeated over and over again, thus getting it stuck in
someone’s head.
