The creators of the four Teenage
, tant Ninja Turtles decided that
apanese names would be corny.
settled on names picked from
art history book.
We thought you would like to
know something about the artists
after whom these turtles were
named.
Michelangelo
These artists were alike in many
ways.
• They were Italian.
• They worked in a city called
Florence at one time in their
careers.
• They lived in a period of
time about 500 years ago called
the Renaissance (REHN-uhsahns).
• They enjoyed great fame
while they were living.
• As was the custom in those
days, they all began working as
Raphael
apprentices (a-PREN-tuh-sees) at
a very young age (12 or a little
older). They served as assistants
to older artists.
All had patrons, or people who
bought their works and helped
support them.
The artists did not just go out
and paint a picture or create a
sculpture and hope to sell it.
Their patrons put in an order
or commissioned the artists to do
a certain piece of art.

Donatello (DAHN-uh-TELL-o)
was the only artist who did not
know the others. He died before the
others were born. He was one of
the greatest sculptors of all time.
While he was very good at making
statues in marble, he was best at
casting them in bronze. He lived
from 1386-1466.

=~=m he Renaissance
was a period in
history that began
in Italy in the
1300s. It later
spread to several nearby
countries. It ended in the 1600s.
The word
"Renaissance"
means "being born
again." What was
"born again" was
an interest in the
writing and art of
ancient Greece and Rome.
A bust of Lorenzo
de Medici (de

was one of the
greatest art
supporters ever. He
lived in the 1400s.

At that time, Italy was not one
country like it is today. It was
divided into areas called citystates. Each city-state had its
own ruler or ruling families.

between some of

who's ever lived. He

For use by teachers and parents at home and at school.
For use with issue: Four Great Artists
Supersport: Darrell Waltrip
Main idea: This issue is about Renaissance art. The following is a list of
activities to be used with this issue. They are listed in order of difficulty, with
the easier pre-reader assignments listed first. Ask the children to do the
following:
1. Compare the art you see in this issue. How are they alike and different?
What different styles do you see? Which do you like the best?
2. Pretend you are commissioning a painting from a Renaissance artist.
Look at photos in your paper to find a picture you would like to have as a
painting or sculpture.
3. If possible, visit a museum and look at the different types of artwork.
4. What do you think of Renaissance art? How is it different from the art
you see today? What would it have been like to live during the Renaissance?
Do you like visiting museums? Why is it important to study and understand
art? Would you like to be a professional artist when you grow up?
5. Find Italy, Rome and Florence on a world map. How does Italy compare
in size to the United States?
6. Circle all the years. Which is the oldest? Which is the most recent? What
is the difference between the two? How long ago was the Renaissance?
7. Do more research on an artist whose work you especially like.
