The Universities Research Association, Inc. (URA) is seeking applications to fill the corporate
position of Chief Financial Officer/Treasurer. The CFO/Treasurer is appointed as an officer of
the corporation. URA is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) corporation consisting of 90 premier research
oriented universities. URA shares responsibility with the University of Chicago for the
management of the Fermi National Laboratory through the Fermi Research Alliance, LLC (FRA).
URA also receives funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for US participation in
the operation of the 19-member Pierre Auger Cosmic Ray Observatory in Argentina. In 2017,
URA will assume responsibilities as a subcontractor under the National Technology and
Engineering Solutions of Sandia (NTESS) LLC for the management and operation of the DOE’s
Sandia National Laboratories (SNL).
The CFO is accountable for the financial operations of the Corporation, including financial risk
management, control systems, and ensuring adherence to the investment and fiscal policies of the
corporation. The CFO presents the financial status of the organization to the Board of Trustees,
and is the staff liaison to the Audit and Finance Committee of the Board. He/she also serves as
the business manager of the corporate office.
He/she represents corporate management in its dealings with government agencies and outside
organizations. The CFO participates in the development of new business, including the
risk/rewards analysis of prospective contracts and in the preparation and submission of proposals
for grants and contracts with the Federal government and in contract administration activities.
Candidates must be experienced in the preparation and oversight of the operating budget,
management and coordination of all fiscal reporting activities, and the oversight of independent
auditors to ensure that audit issues are resolved and compliance requirements met.
A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, and a minimum of seven years of experience at a
senior level is required. CPA strongly preferred. Applicants must have knowledge of Federal
Government accounting, audit, and procurement policies, and not-for-profit business practices.
Experience with contracting at DOE, the National Science Foundation, or NASA would be highly
desirable.
The position may be full or part time, depending on the candidate. Some travel required. URA
