Transcript
For the past 20 years, suitors have been knocking on Penelope’s door trying to get her hand in
marriage. Finally, Antinous gets the idea: the Greeks should write a personal ad to get her attention
and win her affection.
Instructions: Compose a scintillating personal ad that Penelope won’t be able to resist. Use the Greek
Names on the back to give an identity to the suitor who is pursuing Penelope. Caveat: You must
include 3 vocabulary words from any of our lists .
Questions to Consider Before Writing: From the first four books of The Odyssey, what are the
different codes of ethics for men and women? What might Penelope want in a man (remember, she is
married to Odysseus), and what qualities might these many suitors have to offer?
Example: I’m a SWM 40 year-old
TIPS for writing a good Personal Ad,
according to www.Match.com:
o Be personal
o Add humor, but don’t be too sarcastic or
self-depreciating
o Describe who you are, where you want to go
in life, what makes you laugh, things you
enjoy, pet peeves and what your friends call
you as a nickname.
Remember to Use THREE Vocabulary
Words!
(That way, Penelope will know you’re smart. )
romantic poet. Has anyone ever
told you that your kind heart
sparkles such that no gold nor
pearl nor any other jewelry can
match? You are celestial, and I
want to paint you with your bare
description of yourself--painting
through imagination. Just tell me
how red is your lips and how
lucid your eyes are. I will never
leave your side because I know
you’ve been abandoned by a man
who chose bellicose warfare over
your beauty. You'll never ask for
anything else when you romance
with poetry and art. Pick me to be
your man. Just ask for Meletios
at the next Ithaca meeting.
