Skill of the week- Energy Transformations
MONDAY
Read and answer the following questions.
Energy can change forms. An energy transformation is a change from one form of energy to
another form of energy. Energy transformations happen all around you. A toaster changes
electrical to thermal energy to toast bread. Your body changes the chemical energy in food to
mechanical energy as you move. A energy transformation is written as
first energy  new energy ( means turns into)
1. Define an energy transformation: _______________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________
2. Write an energy transformation for a toaster.
_________________________________  _______________________________
3. Write an energy transformation for food in a human’s body.
_________________________________  _______________________________
TUESDAY
Read and answer the following questions.
One of the most common energy transformations is the transformation between potential and kinetic
energy. (Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. Potential energy is stored energy.) Energy
changes form when an object moves up or down. The object has the most potential energy at its
highest point and its lowest potential energy at its lowest point. The object has the most kinetic
energy at its lowest point because it is moving the fastest.
4. A kid takes off on a swing. Label the
greatest potential energy (
PE), and
greatest kinetic energy ( KE),
A
C
.
B
5. Write the energy transformation from point A to point B.
_________________________________  _______________________________
6. Write the energy transformation from point C to point B to point A.
_________________________  ________________________  ________________________
WEDNESDAY
Read and answer the following questions.
Energy transformations can also be created for the 6 forms of energy; chemical, electrical,
electromagnetic, nuclear, thermal and mechanical. Remember
Mechanical energy is position and motion. Thermal energy is heat. Electrical energy is created
by the flow of electrons from atoms. Chemical energy is stored energy in chemical bonds of
atoms. Nuclear energy is stored in the nucleus of atoms. Electromagnetic energy is light.
Write an energy transformation for the following scenarios.
7. The sun has nuclear energy which forms new atoms by fusing the nuclei of atoms. This
energy releases light and heat.
________________________  _________________________  ________________________
8. A student is turns on the stove to make a pizza. What is the energy transformation with the
stove baking a pizza?
________________________  _________________________
THURSDAY
Read and answer the following questions.
9. A dam uses moving water to move panels under the dam. That moving energy then creates
electrons from atoms and creates heat.
________________________  _________________________  ________________________
10. A windmill uses wind to move the panels on the windmill. That energy then stores electrons
from atoms and creates heat.
________________________  _________________________  ________________________
11. What type of energy is in EVERY energy transformation due to friction (rubbing of
particles)?
