Accelerated Mathematics 2: Advanced Algebra, Geometry and Statistics Course Syllabus for Gay Solomon [email protected] COURSE DESCRIPTION, GOALS, AND OBJECTIVES This is the second in a sequence of mathematics courses designed to prepare students to take AB or BC Advanced Placement Calculus. It includes right triangle trigonometry; exponential, logarithmic, and higher degree polynomial functions; matrices; linear programming; vertex-edge graphs; conic sections; planes and spheres; population means, standard deviations, and normal distributions. (Prerequisite: Accelerated Math 1 or Mathematics 2.) This course requires students to: Perform basic operations with matrices; Use matrices to formulate and solve problems; Solve linear programming problems in two variables; Understand and apply matrix representations of vertex-edge graphs; Identify and use special right triangles; Define and apply sine, cosine, and tangent ratios to right triangles; Investigate the relationship between lines and circles; Investigate planes and spheres; Explore inverses of functions; Analyze graphs of polynomial functions of higher degree; Solve a variety of equations and inequalities; Explore exponential functions; Explore logarithmic functions as inverses of exponential functions; Use sample data to make informal inferences about population means and standard deviations; Create probability histograms of discrete random variables, using both experimental and theoretical probabilities; Solve problems involving probabilities by interpreting a normal distribution as a probability histogram for a continuous random variable; Understand the differences between experimental and observational studies by posing questions and collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data; Investigate the relationships between lines and circles; Recognize, analyze, and graph the equations of the conic sections (parabolas, circles, ellipses, and hyperbolas. COURSE UNITS Unit 1 – Matrices and Linear Programming Unit 2 – Right Triangles, Circles, and Spheres Unit 3 – Higher Degree Polynomials Unit 4 – Exponential and Logarithmic Functions Unit 5 – Data Analysis Unit 6 – Conics This course will also review units from Accelerated Math I as deemed necessary by the instructor METHODS OF INSTRUCTION/LEARNING Students will be given an opportunity daily to participate in class activities to learn algebra, geometry, and statistics concepts by practice. It is the student’s responsibility to come to class prepared to learn and to be a positive addition to the classroom each day. Class Question/answer lecture/discussion/demonstration Performance/learning tasks Guided practice GRADING POLICY Grades will be calculated for assessment items that include (but are not limited to) classwork and homework (20%), performance tasks (15%), quizzes (15%), tests (30%), and exams (20%once each 9 weeks). The student score on the Mathematics 2 End-of-Course Test (EOCT) will represent 15% of the final course grade, as required by the state. Materials you need to have – o Required: Paper, Pencil, calculator (minimum-scientific calculator, suggestedgraphing calculator (prefer TI-83, 84, or TI Inspire). o Recommended: a binder for organization. I cannot overemphasize the importance of a calculator. I am available for tutoring Mondays 3:30-4:30 and Thursdays 7:45-8:20. I am also available at other times by appointment.
