One (1) Day Workshop ASSESSING PROTECTIVE BEHAVIOURS OF NONOFFENDING CARE GIVERS IN ALLEGATIONS OF SEXUAL ABUSE aim Every day Child Protection workers must make decisions about the potential risks of allowing convicted and alleged sexual offenders contact with children. In doing so you have to balance the complex and challenging task of recognising the significance of the relationship between a parent and his/her child whilst also considering the risk that a sex offender can pose to his/her own children. A fundamental component of risk assessment is an accurate assessment of the protective capacity of the non offending care giver. Protective capacity has been considered in three domains (i) Cognitive – referring to intellect, knowledge, understanding and recognising potential threats. This includes being able to articulate the children’s needs and understanding the protective role of a parent; (ii) Emotional Protective Capacity – referring to the feelings, attitudes, identification and motivation that results in protective behaviours and, (iii) Behavioural – activity and performance that results in parenting and protective vigilance. At the completion of the workshop you will be able to; date & time Have an understanding of the three domains of protective capacity Have skills and strategies to assess the three domains of protective capacity Have understanding of how each of these domains relate to containment of reoffence risk of the offending parent.
