Park Calls for Retaliation to Possible N. Korean Provocations
Anchor: President Park Geun-hye has ordered the government and
military to make sure that any attempt to launch a provocation by
North Korea will result in the regime’s self-destruction. During a
meeting with her senior secretaries on Monday, Park emphasized
that North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missiles are not just risk
factors anymore, but have become all the more real and called on
her officials to remain vigilant.

Report: President Park Geun-hye has called for a stern retaliation to
possible North Korean provocations.
The South Korean president on Monday held a meeting with her
secretaries to discuss North Korea's recent test-firing of a
submarine-launched ballistic missile(SLBM).

"No matter what kind of provocation North Korea stages, make sure
that you maintain stern readiness so that the North's attempt itself
would lead to the self-destruction of the North Korean regime."
She ordered her officials to devise substantial measures to cope
with North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.
Ahead of embarking on a trip to attend G20 and ASEAN-related
summits this week, President Park said that she will try to draw
international cooperation to deal with North Korea during the
meetings.

"I will place my focus during the [overseas trips] on the thorough
implementation of UNSC sanctions and other ways to increase
pressure on North Korea."
She stressed that North Korean nuclear and missile programs are
no longer simply risk factors but present dangers to national security,
saying that the North would never give up its goal of miniaturizing its
nuclear weapons.
Regarding the North Korea Human Rights Act set to be put in place
next month, she instructed her officials to make sure that the
legislation would provide an opportunity to form a consensus at
home and abroad on the need to improve the situation in the North.
She also called on them to make certain that the current outbreaks
of Cholera and hepatitis c are properly contained.

Defense Chief Visits UFG Site
The Defense Ministry says Minister Han Min-koo visited the site of
the ongoing joint South Korea-U.S. Ulchi Freedom Guardian(UFG)
exercise at the Combined Forces Command on Monday.
Encouraging Korean and American soldiers there, Minister Han said
that as the two nations' alliance grew sturdier undergoing numerous
trials and hardship, the UFG exercise taking place amidst a grave
security situation will strengthen the partnership even more.
He also asked the servicemen of the two countries to succeed the
comradeship of their senior colleagues bonded in blood and wisely
overcome the current crisis on the Korean Peninsula. He urged
them to serve as a cornerstone for peace and stability in Northeast
Asia and around the world.
Saenuri Fl. Chief Calls for Nuclear-Powered Submarine against
N. Korea
Ruling Saenuri Party Floor Leader Chung Jin-suk has urged the
nation's military to consider operating a nuclear-powered submarine.
During a meeting of the party’s Supreme Council on Monday, Chung
discussed North Korea's recent test firing of a submarine-launched
ballistic missiles(SLBM).
While calling the latest weapons advancement in the North as a
grave threat to the regional security of Northeast Asia, the floor chief
referred to the Roh Moo-hyun government's suspended efforts in
2003 to build a four-thousand-ton nuclear-powered submarine.
After noting that North Korean SLBMs pose greater risks than
ground-launched missiles, he called on the military to actively
consider the option in addition to boosting its alliance with the U.S.
via the installation of THAAD and fortification of a nuclear umbrella.
Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry has revealed its cautious stance
about resuming its suspended pursuit of developing a nuclearpowered submarine.
Ministry Spokesman Moon Sang-gyun said in a news briefing
Monday that nothing has been decided about the development of a
nuclear submarine.
Military Predicts N. Korea to Deploy SLBM in 1-3 Years
Seoul's Defense Ministry has predicted that North Korea could
deploy submarine-launched ballistic missiles(SLBM) in one to three
years, which is earlier than initially expected.
In a report submitted to the parliament's Defense Committee on
Monday, the ministry said that North Korea will give its all to deploy
SLBMs in the coming years.
The ministry said it will likely take one to three years until the actual
deployment as the North will launch more missiles to verify
credibility and will also need time to inspect operational capabilities
of its submarines.
In April, the South Korean military forecast that the deployment will
take place in three to four years at the earliest.
Regarding Pyongyang's latest SLBM launch, the Defense Ministry
assessed in the report that the test-launch appears to have
succeeded with a maximum altitude of over 500 kilometers and a
range of approximately 500 kilometers.
The ministry said the missile poses a direct threat to South Korea
and can even threaten the U.S. mainland.
New Main Opp. Chief Choo Mi-ae Launches Duties
Representative Choo Mi-ae began her term as the new chairwoman
of the Minjoo Party of Korea(MPK) by visiting the Seoul National
Cemetery on Monday.
The main opposition bloc's Floor Leader Woo Sang-ho accompanied
her, along with the new members of the party’s Supreme Council,
who were elected at Saturday's National Convention.
Choo and other MPK leaders also visited the graves of former
presidents Rhee Syngman, Park Chung-hee and Kim Young-sam,
as well as Kim Dae-jung, who helped Choo chart out her political
career.
Later in the day, Choo chaired an inaugural Supreme Council
meeting before sitting down with National Assembly Speaker Chung
Sye-kyun, ruling Saenuri Party Chairman Lee Jung-hyun and minor
opposition People’s Party interim leader Park Jie-won.
During the Minjoo's party convention on Saturday, the main
opposition elected the five-term lawmaker as its new chairwoman.
Choo secured 54 percent of the votes, beating out Representative
Lee Jong-kul, who garnered 23 percent and Kim Sang-gon, the
former head of the party's reform committee, who won 22 percent of
the votes.
S. Korean Embassy in China Warns of N. Korean Threats
against S. Koreans
The South Korean Embassy in China has reissued an emergency
notice warning South Koreans against North Korea’s growing
terrorist threats amid a recent spate of defections by high-ranking
North Korean officials.
In the latest notice, the embassy said given the series of defections,
along with the North’s heightened threats of provocations, it is
possible for North Korea to carry out terrorist attacks or abductions
of South Korean nationals visiting or residing overseas.
The embassy strongly requested South Koreans residing in or
traveling to China to stay alert and take necessary safety
precautions as well as refrain from visiting China-North Korea border
areas and contacting North Koreans.
The embassy urged South Koreans to inform their acquaintances of
their travel routes when planning to go out and check updated safety
tips from Chinese security authorities or South Korean diplomatic
outposts in China.
CDC Suspects Cholera-Contaminated Seawater
Anchor: South Korean health authorities are yet to determine the
infection routes regarding two recent cases of cholera in the country.
The South Korean Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention(CDC) said that given its epidemiological study so far, the
most likely culprit is seawater infected with cholera germs.

Report: The two who contracted cholera ate raw seafood from the
southern island city of Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province.
The South Korean Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention(CDC) has been seeking to find a third person, like a
cook or a common friend of the two, possibly a missing link between
the two patients.
Briefing the preliminary result of the epidemiological study on
Sunday, the CDC’s Center for Infectious Disease ruled out the
possibility.

“So far, the two patients are presumed to have been infected
through a separate food intake and there seems to be no relation to
the spread of the disease between the two."
Health authorities tested everyone the two patients met before and
after their infections. Cooking utensils used in processing the raw
seafood dishes in question also tested negative for the disease.
The CDC suspects that seawater in the Geoje Island coast is
possibly contaminated with the bacteria.

Gov't Begins Sea Survey Near Geoje to Determine Cholera
Virus
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries on Monday launched a twoweek inspection in six maritime locations east of Geoje Island to
determine the infection route of cholera, which was first confirmed a
week ago.
South Korea's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC)
said an inspection vessel went out to sea at 10 a.m. and is
conducting surveys with related ministry officials.
A CDC official said that inspectors will collect seawater as well as
samples of plankton by soaking gauze deep in the sea for 24 hours
and running tests to see if they find strains of the cholera virus. The
official said it will take at least two to three days for the results to
come out.
The CDC will also run additional tests on seawater samples
collected from three coastal areas near Geoje, where one of the two
cholera cases were confirmed.
It also plans to expand monitoring of seafood and other food
products if necessary.
Special Committee Holds Hearing on Toxic Humidifier Sterilizer
Scandal
The National Assembly’s special committee investigating the toxic
humidifier sterilizer case focused on determining whether the head
office of Oxy Reckitt Benckiser(RB) was involved in the scandal
during a hearing held on Monday.
On the first day of the two-day hearing, ruling Saenuri Party
lawmaker Lee Man-hee claimed that the head office of Oxy RB was
involved in halting efforts to test the toxicity of humidifier sterilizers.
Lee said that in 2000 before it was taken over by RB, Oxy
recognized the need to conduct such safety tests but such tests
were stopped at the request of the head office.
