EARTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE – PRELIMINARY COURSE Identifying Rocks Practical Assessment Task Name:______________________________________ Date: _______________ This task uses Dot point – 8.3.1 – “perform a first-hand investigation and use second hand data to classify several common igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks using a key, with particular reference to those rocks in the local environment” - to test the following outcomes in the syllabus. P7 – identifies and describes the physical and chemical features of the environment. P12 – discusses the validity and reliability of data gathered from first-hand investigations and secondary sources. P13 – identifies appropriate terminology and reporting styles to communicate information and understanding in Earth and Environmental Science. P14 – draws valid conclusions from gathered data and information. TASK: You are provided with six rock samples by your teacher. For each sample use your observations, your knowledge of the classification of rocks, and the key given in this task for the identification of rocks to complete the answer sheet on the different samples. You are to complete all sections of the answer sheets in the spaces provided. KEY TO IDENTIFICATION OF ROCKS. 1. Does the rock “fizz” when a drop of acid is placed on it? Yes – Go to 8, No – Go to 2 2. Does the rock contain obvious crystals? Yes – Go to 6, No – Go to 3 3. Does the rock appear to be made of bits of other rocks? Yes – Go to 9, No – Go to 4 4. Do bits of the rock fall off a freshly broken surface, when it is gently rubbed? Yes – Go to 5, No – Go to 6 5. Does the rock contain shiny mica? Yes – Go to 6, No – Go to 9 6. Does the rock contain a preferred growth in the crystals? Yes – Go to 10, No – Go to 7 7. The rock is an IGNEOUS rock. – Go to section on igneous rocks. 8. Does the rock have signs of fossils present? Yes – Go to 9, No – Go to 11 9. The rock is a SEDIMENTARY rock – Go to section on sedimentary rocks. 10. The rock is a METAMORPHIC rock – Go to section on metamorphic rocks. 11. Is the rock white in colour? Yes – Go to 112, No – Go to 13. 12. The rock is a contact METAMORPHIC marble . 13. The rock is a lithic SEDIMENTARY limestone. CLASSIFICATION: CLASTIC SEDIMENTARY ROCKS Size of Particles Shape of Particles Sorting of Grains Name of Rock Large – over 5mm Rounded Poor – mixed sizes Conglomerate Large – over 5mm Both Round and Angular Very Poor – mixed sizes Tillite Large – over 5mm Sharp and Angular Poor – mixed sizes Breccia Medium – 0.5 – 5mm Rounded Poor – mixed sizes Greywacke Medium – 0.5 – 5mm Rounded Good – all similar size Sandstone Flakes and Grains Good – all similar size Siltstone Flakes Good – all similar size Shale Fine - < 0.5mm Very Fine - < 0.1mm CLASSIFICATION: IGNEOUS ROCKS Size of Crystals Colour of Rock Name of Rock Large – clearly seen with the eye Pink / White with black flecks of mica Granite Large – clearly seen with the eye White crystals with a grey background. Diorite Large – clearly seen with the eye Dark black or green. Gabbro Medium – seen clearly with a hand lens Dark black to grey with some white flecks Dolerite Fine – only seen with the aid of a microscope. Reddish pink to white. Rhyolite Fine – only seen with the aid of a microscope. Pale grey. Andesite Fine – only seen with the aid of a microscope. Dark black to grey. Basalt CLASSIFICATION: METAMORPHIC ROCKS Size of Crystals / Grains Preferred Orientation of Minerals Features Name of Rock Large Present Made almost entirely of mica, with other minerals within. Schist Large Present Usually in bands of white feldspar / quartz and black mica Gneiss Large Not Present White crystalline mass of blocky calcite – reacts with acid Marble Medium Present Dark black with small crystals seen under a hand lens Amphibolite Medium Present Sheen present, mica can be seen under a hand lens Phyllite Medium Not Present Generally white or cream in colour. Rock is very hard to break. Does not react with acid Quartzite Fine Present Rock tends to break along flat smooth surfaces or “cleavage” planes Slate EARTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE – PRELIMINARY COURSE PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT TASK.
