Family Pedigree Extra Credit Project- 40 POINTS POSSIBLE Introduction: A pedigree is a family tree that shows the relationships among family members and traces a specific genetic trait within the family. By following a few guidelines, you can make a pedigree chart for your family. You might even be able to find a pattern in the way a family characteristic is inherited. Directions: Using a poster board or large poster paper, create your family pedigree of one particular trait (either a known genetic disorder in your family or a trait from the list below). You must include the following elements: Must be completed on large poster paper All lines and symbols straight, even, and neat—use a ruler! Title detailing what trait your pedigree shows A legend showing symbols Minimum of 3 generations, with at least 4 individuals in each generation (12 people minimum) First names for all members Generations labeled with Roman numerals and individuals labeled numerically 1, 2, 3….etc. Include a key that shows which letters are being used to represent the trait alleles and what the possible genotypes are for each phenotype Indicate people with the recessive form of the trait (shaded), carriers and people with the dominant form of trait Create a Punnett square of 2 people with known genotypes from your pedigree. List the genotypic and phenotypic ratios/percentages. Indicate the genotype of each person (If there are several possible genotypes, put a question mark for that allele- Ex. For a unknown tongue roller T?) Possible traits: Trait Widow’s peak Dimples Freckles Ear lobes Hair on middle digit Toe length Tongue roller Height Females: Males: Curved Thumb Cleft Chin Roman Nose Dominant widow’s peak Dimples Freckles Free ear lobes Hair on middle digit 2nd toe longer Tongue roller Short less than 5’7 less than 5’10 Hitchhiker thumb No cleft Chin Nose w/bump Recessive straight hairline No dimples No freckles Attached No hair on middle digit Big toe longer Non-tongue roller Tall 5’7 or above 5’10 or above Straight Thumb Cleft Chin Straight nose
