Name: ___________________________ Date: _____________ Unit 2: Working with Radicals Scientific Notation Period: ________ M8N1 ~ Students will understand different representations of numbers including square roots, exponents, and scientific notation. When are exponents and square roots used and why are they important? An ordinary quarter contains about 97,700,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms. The average size of an atom is about 0.00000003 centimeters across. These numbers are written in standard notation, and they are not very easy to work with. ___________________________ is a shorthand way of writing very large or very small numbers. Scientific notation is expressed as a product of a power of ten and a number greater than or equal to 1 but less then 10. A positive exponent means to move the decimal to the right. Example: Write 9.2 x 106 in standard notation. A negative exponent means to move the decimal to the left. Example: Write 3.6 x 10-2 in standard notation. To write a number in scientific notation, we do the opposite of what we would do to write it in standard form. Example: Write 100,000,000 in scientific notation. Example: Write 0.00007 in scientific notation. How could we write the atoms in a quarter in scientific notation? How could we write the size of each atom in scientific notation? You try… Write each number in standard notation. 1.) 3.12 x 109. 2.) -4.7 x 107. Write each number in scientific notation. 3.) 0. 000057 4.) 6,980,000 For Homework: Find two uses of scientific notation from your science book. Write the example and explain what it is used for.
