UNIT 2: THE UNIVERSAL NEED FOR GOD.
Sacred Heart College
CONTEXT:
Jesus said that he did not come to destroy the old law of Moses but to complete it. He was a Jew, born
of a Jewish mother and all of his disciples were Jews. Some people did not accept him as the Messiah
and so rejected his teachings; they remained with the old ways and kept the Jewish faith. Those that
did accept Jesus as the Messiah (Hebrew word) or the Christ (Greek word), followed his teachings and
example. They were known as “Followers of the Way ”, as “Followers of the Light”, as the
“Nazarenes” and finally someone used the name “Christians”. Eventually this became the common
name used to identify the followers of Jesus (the Christ).
So Christianity has a Jewish beginning and heritage. Many Christian prayers, rituals, sacred places and
laws are the same as, or are similar to, those found in Judaism. Jesus was sometimes referred to as a
“son of Abraham” and a “son of David”.
It will help us to understand our Christian faith if we understand something of the Jewish history and
faith from which Christianity has developed.
You have two tasks. Both should be completed on computer and saved in “My Portfolio”.
These tasks will allow you to demonstrate what you have learned in this Unit. It will allow your
teacher to assess how much you have learned.
TASK 1:
In a group of two or three research and identify some similarities and some differences
between the Jewish and Christian Religions.
Wherever possible, explain why they are similar or why they are different.
There are six areas to investigate:
i.
ii.
iii.
Sacred symbols
Sacred objects
Sacred sites
iv.
v.
vi.
Religious rituals
Religious leaders
Religious laws
This could be done by setting out your findings in a table. Put the information about the Jewish
Religion in one column and the information about Christianity, side by side, in the column next to it. If
you wish to present it differently, check with your teacher first.
As always, you need to include a bibliography.
Task One is due on or before ___ / ___ / 2005
TASK 2:
By yourself, compare (ie: find similarities) and contrast (ie: find differences) between the Covenant in
the Old Testament and that in the New Testament.
To complete this task, answer the following questions.
1. What is a Covenant ?
2. What is the Old Covenant and what is the New Covenant ?
What words were used in each case ? Give the Scripture reference for each.
3. Who made each Covenant ? Where ? When ?
4. How did each come about ? What actually happened ?
5. How do followers of each faith commemorate each Covenant ?
As always, you need to include a bibliography.
Task Two is due on or before ___ / ___ / 2005
HELP
To help you get started, some templates have been provided as a guide as to how you might set out
your work. If you wish, you may change them and be more creative with the text and setting out. If
there is not enough space simply make it larger or add another page.
It is good to present your work in an interesting manner but it is much more important to answer the
questions properly and provide the information requested.
If you are able to do this work “on line” you can access your text book electronically (see “My
Classes”). This way you can copy and paste relevant quotes from your Resource Book rather than
having to write / type it out yourself.
By accessing the internet you can copy and paste maps, pictures and symbols.
Remember that whenever you use someone else’s work you should acknowledge where you got it
from. This is also listed in your bibliography.
