Plant & Animal Cell Worksheet / Quiz Study Guide
Introduction: The cell is the basic unit of life. All organisms are made up of one or more cells. Cells are
very small (most are microscopic) and come in different shapes. Cells contain tiny structures called organelles
that carry out specific functions for the cell.
Directions: Use your notes and textbook to complete this worksheet.
Part 1: Label the plant and animal cells.
Part 2: Using the cell structures shown in the word bank, write the name of the correct structure in the
box next to each function.

Function
Tiny cell structures that carry out specific functions within a cell.
The clear, jelly-like substance between the cell membrane and the
nucleus.
A rigid layer that surrounds plant cells and provides support and
protection.
The flexible protective layer that surrounds all cells and controls what
goes into and out of the cell.
The large organelle that contains the cell’s genetic material and directs
all of the cell’s functions; known as the “control center” of the cell.
Genetic material located inside the nucleus.
Organelles that make ribosomes.
Organelles that make proteins.
A maze of passageways that carry proteins and other materials from one
part of the cell to another.
The green pigment located in chloroplasts that captures energy from the
sun.
A molecule that acts as the main energy source for cell processes;
produced and released by the mitochondria.
Organelles that receive, package, and distribute proteins and other
materials.
Organelles that produce energy for the cell; known as the
“powerhouses” of the cell.
Small round structures in cells that break down food particles and worn
out cell parts; found mostly in animal cells.
Plant organelles that capture energy from sunlight and use it to carry out
photosynthesis.
Organelles that store water and other materials for the cell. Plant cells
usually have one large one. Animal cells may have many smaller ones.
The sugar plants make during photosynthesis.
