Semester Outline
Science
Grade 5
Semester 1 2011 – 2012
I.
Semester Outline
1. Understand the various systems in the human body and animal
body
Students identify parts and functions of human and animal
organs. They explain the process of human respiratory,
digestive, and blood circulatory systems. Students use a
human body board, scheme, and torso to understand the
parts of organs, and they use several simple tools to make
artificial lungs. Related to human digestive system, students
explore various kinds of food nutrients through experiments
and articles finding about food nutrients and they create
some healthy food during the Healthy Day. To complete their
understanding, students identify the malfunctions of human
respiratory, digestive, and blood circulatory organs.
2. Understand how the green plant makes the food
Students explore parts of plants and leaves. They
identify the functions of parts of leaf and food storing
in plants. Students explore how plants make food
through a photosynthesis process. Students describe
human and animal dependency on green plants as
their energy (food) source. Students use different
color leaves and some chemical liquid to test the chlorophyll in
leaves and make report of the experiment using scientific
methodology.
3. Identify types of animal and plant adaptation in environment
Students identify animals and plants adaptation to certain
environments to survive. They explore the organs of
animals to identify the ways in protecting themselves
from predators. They explore various ways of plants
reproduction to maintain their lives. Students use
some simple tools to make diorama of various kinds of
habitats on earth. To complete their understanding
about animals and plants adaptation, students apply
conservation actions through Green Day activities.

Lesson Objectives
1. Understand the various systems in the human body and animal
body
Through this course, students will:
- Identify Structure and function of human respiratory system
- Identify structure and function of animal respiratory system (fish,
bird, insect, and worm)
- Identify structure and function of human digestive system and its
relation to food and human health
- Identify structure and function of human circulatory system
- Illustrate problems due to the human circulatory system
- Create self awareness to maintain the body health as an
expression of a gratitude to God’s creation.
2. Understand how the green plant makes the food
Through this course, students will:
- Identify the relation between chlorophyll and green plants
- Describe the process of photosynthesis
- Analyze human and animal dependency to the green plants a food
source
- Actively involved preserving the plant as a gratitude to God’s
creation.
3. Identify types of animal and plant adaptation in environment
Through this course, students will:
- Identify type of animal’s adaptation in specific environment to
survive
- Illustrate food web to work out relationships between living things
and resources needed to survive
- Identify types of plant’s adaptation in specific environment to
survive
- Explore the balance of the environment to the existence of God.
