in General Adult Psychiatry, Dykebar Hospital and
Paisley Community Mental Health Team

1.
This is a full time LAT/Clinical Fellow post, fixed term from 4/10/2010 – 01/02/2011.
The successful applicant will be based at Dykebar Hospital and the Paisley CMHT, providing
services to both inpatients and service users in the community.
2.
Present Service Provision
Community mental health services in Renfrewshire are part of Renfrewshire CHP, and cover a total
population of 181,481. The Mental Health Partnership for Greater Glasgow and Clyde supports and
coordinates the delivery of adult mental health services delivered by CHCPs in four divisions across
the Board area: South Clyde, South Glasgow, West Glasgow and Northeast Glasgow.
There is an overarching Adult Mental Health Partnership for Greater Glasgow and Clyde ensuring
consistency of the adult mental health services delivered by the CHCPs.The Service General
Manager for Mental Health in Renfrewshire is Fiona McNeill and the clinical director is Dr Michael
Smith. The Medical Director of the Partnership is Dr Linda Watt, and the Director is Anne Hawkins.
In Renfrewshire, the inpatient unit is based at Dykebar Hospital. There are currently 45 acute
inpatient beds based at Dykebar Hospital. The intensive psychiatric care unit beds are situated in
Inverclyde Royal Hospital. There is a total of 20 beds providing inpatient intensive rehabilitation and
continuing care services for South Clyde. There is also an Out-Patient Department, Psychology and
Psychotherapy Departments and an Alcohol Problems Clinic.
The Royal Alexandra Hospital has 40 old age psychiatry acute beds and an old age psychiatry Day
Hospital based on a District General Hospital site.
Adult Mental Health Services are currently based round two integrated health and social work
community mental health teams (CMHTs) - a Paisley CMHT based at the Charleston Centre, Paisley
and a West Renfrewshire/Renfrew CMHT is based at Mile End Mill in Paisley . Significant expansion
in the staff complement for both CMHTs was carried out for 2009.
The Paisley CMHT is based at the Charleston Centre, and currently comprises 1 Staff Grade, 0.5
Nurse Team Leader, 5.0 G Grades, 3.0 Staff Nurses, 2.0 Support Workers, 2.0 OT's, 1.0 Consultant
Psychologist, 1.0 Senior Social Worker, 4.0 Social Workers, 1.0 Social work Assistant, and 3.0 SW
Support Workers.
The West Renfrewshire/Renfrew Adult Community Mental Health Team currently consists of 0.5 H
Grade, 5.0 G Grades, 3.0 Senior Nurses, 5.0 Support Workers, 1.0 Senior Occupational Therapist,
1.0 Grade A Psychologist, 4.0 Social Workers/MHOs and 1.0 Social Work Assistant.
The “Doing Well” team (6.4 clinicians including 0.2 WTE consultant psychiatrist) provides treatment
for all patients presenting with a new episode of low mood in West Renfrewshire. This service has
been extended from Nov 2008 and now forms a new Primary Care Mental Health function across all
of Renfrewshire.
The Intensive Home Treatment Team (IHTT) has been in operation since April 2008. The team
provides emergency assessments, gatekeeps all new admissions and provides home treatment
where indicated. The team operates from 9am to 10pm weekdays and 10am to 6pm weekends and
holidays. Medical input to the team is 9-5pm weekdays only. The team comprises of 0.5 Consultant
Psychiatrist, 0.6 Staff Grade, 1.8 Team Secretary, 1 Team Leader, 8 Senior IHTT Practitioners (7
nurses & 1 social worker) and 4 IHTT Practitioners (all of which are nurses).
A Psychotherapy Department currently comprises a full-time consultant psychiatrist, two full-time
nurse therapists and two part-time analysts.
Child and Adolescent Services are based at Johnstone Hospital but the inpatient beds are provided
at Gartnavel Royal Hospital and Yorkhill Hospital respectively. There are 10 Learning Disability
assessment/treatment beds and a Community Learning Disability Team.

4.
Duties of the Post
CLINICAL WORK
To carry out the duties of a basic trainee in general adult psychiatry. The post is part of
RCGP and RCPysch approved training schemes and has excellent training opportunities in
general adult psychiatry. This will involve the assessment and treatment of patients with
mental illness in the inpatient wards at Dykebar Hospital and in the outpatient setting. The
trainee will work closely with the CMHTs and Intensive Home Treatment Team. On call
duties include the assessment of psychiatric emergencies at RAH and Dykebar Hospital plus
general medical and psychiatric care to the psychiatric in patient beds at RAH and Dykebar
Hospital. Applicants should be able to evidence competencies of an FY2 doctor and full
GMC registration.
This post holds educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean. If appointed as a Clinical
Fellow this post will not be recognised for training.
OUT OF HOURS WORK
The post is on a partial shift pattern.
OCCASIONAL EMERGENCIES
The postholder accepts that he/she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies in
unforeseen circumstances, at the request of clinical managers, in consultation where
practicable with his/her colleagues both senior and junior.
TEACHING
Medical students from Glasgow University are attached to the consultant psychiatrists on a 5
week clinical clerkship basis. The students receive teaching in both the hospital and
community settings to enable as rounded an experience in psychiatry as possible. The
postholder will be expected to participate in the teaching of medical students, as well as
teaching students of other disciplines.
AUDIT / RESEARCH
The postholder would be encouraged to participate in audit / research projects as appropriate.
CONTINUING EDUCATION
Continuing Professional Development is encouraged, as is attendance at the fortnightly case
conferences / journal clubs. The facilities of the medical libraries at Dykebar and the Royal
Alexandra Hospital will be available. There is also an online library, which includes a
literature search facility, to which all staff may have access. Advice on continuing
postgraduate education and careers counselling is available from both the College Tutor and
other senior staff.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
1.
Terms and Conditions of Service
The terms and conditions applicable to this post are those of Greater Glasgow and Clyde
Health Board.
2.
Superannuation
There is an NHS Superannuation Scheme which involves employee contributions of 7.5% of
their salary. Employees may opt out of the NHS Superannuation Scheme if they wish.
3.
Annual Leave
The full annual leave entitlement appropriate to this grade is 5 weeks (pro rata for part-time).
In addition there is an entitlement to statutory and public holidays as determined for Health
Board staff.
4.
Hours of Duty
40 hours per week, plus out of hours work (roughly 1 in 8).
5.
Period of Notice
This post is subject to 1 month’s notice on either side. This post is for a fixed term – namely
4/10/10 – 1/02/11 inclusive.
6.
No Smoking Policy
In keeping with legislation, and recognising the danger to health of smoking as well as the
right of non-smokers to enjoy smoke-free air, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde has
