Ziad elnasser, md, ph.d FIRST SEMESTER, 2009/2010 This is an introductory course in medical microbiology for medical, dental, and pharm D students, designed mainly to prepare students to understand the systemic microbiology of the modules, it covers basic principles of bacteriology, virology, mycology, immunology and parasitology, also it covers basic concepts of infection control in hospitals, sterilization and disinfection, and specimen collection for the clinical microbiology laboratory. The laboratory part covers basic techniques in microbiology. Textbook used: Microbiology for the Health Sciences sixth edition, by Gwendolyn Burton and Paul Engelkirk. Course grades: Three exams are going to be given during the course, the first midterm is worth 30% will be held after the sixth week, the second midterm will be worth 30% and also will be worth 30% and will be held after the 12th weeks of the course, and a final exam worth 40% of the total grade at the end of the semester. Methods of instruction: The course is of three credit hours, it has two lectures per week and one laboratory. 1 Lecture distribution and timing First week 1. Introduction and history of microbiology 2. Scope of Microbiology and Microscopy. Second week 3. Bacterial Cell structure. 4. Taxonomy and classification. Third week 5. Diversity of Microorganisms.and microbial techniques. 6. Diversity of Microorganisms and Microbial techniques. Fourth week 7. Basic chemistry concepts in microbiology. 8. Basic Biochemistry concepts in Microbiology. Fifth week 9. Microbial physiology and Growth. 10 Bacterial genetics. Sixth week 11 Sterilization and disinfection. 12 Antimicrobial agents. Seventh Week 13 First Midterm Examination. 14 Mechanisms of antibiotics resistance. Eighth Week 15 Endogenous Microbial flora. 16 Biological warfare. Ninth Week 17 Microbial pathogenesis and virulence. 18 Epidemiology and disease transmission. Tenth week 19 Acquired Hospital Infection (Nosocomial infection) 20 Specimen Handling and collection for the Microbiology laboratory. Eleventh week 21 Microbial waste disposal. 22 Nonspecific immune system. Twelfth week 23. Specific immune response as the third line of denfese. 24. Vaccination. Thirteenth week 25.
