I. Course Objectives
A) Problems in clinical microbiology
B) Experience in diagnostic microbiology
C) Gain an appreciation of the role of clinical microbiology in the management of infectious
diseases.
D) Acquaint persons (students) with the discipline and its place in medicine in general.
Interactions between clinical laboratories and clinical services.
II. Methods of Instruction
A) Didactic (schedule, topic, faculty) Survey of major topics in clinical microbiology (e.g.,
blood cultures, GI pathogens, respiratory pathogens): Paul M. Southern, Jr., M.D., Rita
Holloway, Ph.D., Dominick Cavuoti, D.O.
B) Clinical (schedule, faculty teaching, house staff teaching) Attend weekly follow-up rounds
of Infectious Diseases (adult) Service; attend clinical pathology conference once weekly;
attend weekly Infectious Diseases Clinical Conference; attend bi-weekly Citywide
Infectious Diseases Conferences; attend monthly Infection Control Committee meetings.
Both faculty members and house staff members will conduct these. Attend advanced CP
Course Teaching Sessions -3 hours/week (Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays). Attend
daily (M-F) "sign-out" sessions to evaluate validity, clarity, and clinical utility of
expensive and/or referral tests.
C) Student responsibilities: Attend all above activities; be present as scheduled for clinical
laboratory workstation assignments (mainly as observers); present one short talk (20-30
minutes) on an applicable topic for clinical microbiology faculty and technologists. Assist
Pathology residents in clinical laboratory problem correlations. Attend daily (M-F) "signout" sessions with Drs. Southern, Holloway and Cavuoti.
III. Method of Student Evaluation
A) Record of attendance at regularly scheduled activities of the elective, as outlined above.
B) Initiative, enthusiasm for and positive contributions to the conferences, rounds and other
activities during the elective period.
C) There will be no formal examinations given.
