SIFE therefore partners with organizations both local and international in other to come together to better the living standards of the poor and needy through its synergies. Mostly SIFE work is a voluntary service that SIFERS provide throughout their activities. TOMEFA PROJECT SIFERS are student of the University College of Management studies (UCOMS) We write this to tell you about the plight of an Island called Tomefa which is located along the Weija Lake, right in the heart of Accra. There are over 1,600 people living on this island and the sad story is that they live below the poverty line EVEN IN Ghanaian Terms. They lack basic necessities of life like healthcare and educational facilities, treated water and electricity. It was basically a question of doing some non-curricula activities which later became a question of a slight in our conscience to see how other people in Ghana capital lived their lives. We the students began our project with the projecting the island an exercise in social justice and the best we could do at that time was to promote it, at first as an Agro-tourism Centre in Ghana by creating strong synergies with government agencies, UNDP and the Ghana media. We have so far registered 900 farmers under the National Health Insurance Scheme with the help of the National Health Insurance Authority. We have also introduced the farmers to modern farming technologies like raising crops in green housing and the use of well-dried manure instead of wet dropping which contains a lot of pathogens. The people of this Island live on the little income they earn from their farming business. The worst part is that they find it difficult to look after their families during pre-harvest time. As a result of this, plans need to be advanced to do series of projects on the island this year to improve the living standards of the people of Tomefa. These projects have been well explained below: Shallow Fish Farming project 70% of the people of Tomefa are fish farmers and they live solely on the income from that business. The inhabitants predominantly depend on the river for fish all the time. Modern fish farming methods like shallow fish farming; for example. Constructing fish ponds in the river were unknown to them and as such they are not utilized. This poor fish farming mechanism associated with the 4 people of Tomefa culminate in low harvest irrespective of the harvest season leading to low income levels and as extreme poverty for majority of the people. More so, the farmers need to be sensitized on the need to employ shallow fish farming technique so as to improve their farming practices as well as income levels. Health Facility Project Tomefa with its 1,600 populace, lack proper health facilities. The people often have to choose between spending nearly 30 minutes on the river to access modern medical care and one hour fifty minutes by road to satisfy the same health objective. Many of them are not able to afford the health care cost and they use some traditional methods of medicine that have created untold problems with worsening sickly conditions. Others believe in church related healing procedures which make things even worse SIFE student are trying to get the necessary funds to establish a health clinic, at least for first aid purposes. There are plans to train one of the young people to be trained as a first aid nurse and we have to find the resources for the fees and upkeep. Some of our students are able to explain to them the need for such a clinic and they are coming round to accept the importance of having this. We all have to help with the agenda of bettering the health situation of Tomefa by building a community clinic for the occupants of the Island for their health is their wealth. Educational Facility The children of Tomefa community are deprived of fundamental educational rights such as access to basic education and other learning facilities including convenient places of study and community libraries. Out of the 1600 populace, 40% of this figure constitutes those who are eligible for basic education. It is overwhelming to note that, these people have access to only one basic school in the vicinity. This school provides education up to primary three and all continuing students have to go on with their education outside Tomefa either by river or road to and from Tomefa whichever the case is desirable. It is in the light of this phenomenon that all must put hands together in seeking to aid in the development of the basic educational infrastructure within the community of Tomefa. Its due to the movement to and fro on the river to get access to education, lives of some young students were lost. In this plight, we suggest the island really needs educational facilities to prevent such occurrences. The Blind family Located on Tomefa Island is one family called the Lalala Family who are all blind? It is amazing to see these five member blind family fishing on the Weija Lake. That is the only source of income to them and without fishing, they will go hungry. Imagine been on an island with one of the highest poverty rates in 5 Ghana and been blind, and as if that is not enough, using this situation to fish in other to feed your family. We managed to secure a sponsorship for this family to undergo their operation and they now have their sight back. This Lalala family was used as a pilot family for their operation since they were having the fear of losing their lives when they undergo the operation. But after education them, they went and the operation was successful, there are two more blind families who are also willing to undergo the operation. in our quest to help the family is what the ones that has been operated on has to live on in terms of feeding and clothing since they have been prohibited from work now. And also funds to help the others undergo their operation. They really need our help. As concerned as SIFERS are, we write to invite you to extend a helping hand to the people of Tomefa for their standard of living to be improved, for we can all remain living, thinking and serving where we are coming from. We are counting on your usual corporation.
