What are the stories behind Zeus, Poseidon, Hades I chose to do this summery on Greek Mythology because I have always been fascinated by myths and legends ever since I was young all thanks to a mysterious mythology book that I found in my room when I was about seven or so. That sparked my fascination, so now I have multiple books on myths, monsters, and dragons (almost anything involving magic, sorcery, and of course some sort of god or goddess.) So I finally got curious about the three gods Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. And this is what I found http://www.greekmythology.com/Olympians/Zeus/zeus.html Zeus Zeus was the god of the sky and ruler of the Olympian gods. Zeus overthrew his Father Cronus. He then drew lots with his brothers Poseidon and Hades. Zeus won the draw and became the supreme ruler of the gods. He is lord of the sky, the rain god. His weapon is a thunderbolt which he hurls at those who displease him. He is married to Hera but, is famous for his many affairs. He is also known to punish those that lie or break oaths. He was the rain god, and the cloud gatherer, who wielded the terrible thunderbolt. His breastplate was the aegis, his bird the eagle, his tree the oak. He is represented as the god of justice and mercy, the protector of the weak, and the punisher of the wicked. Zeus was the god of the sky and the ruler of the Olympians. (Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Hera, Aris, Athena, Apollo, Aphrodite, Hermes, Artemis, Hephaestus) Zeus soon overthrew his father and drew lots with both his brother. When Zeus won he became the supreme ruler of the gods. Even though Zeus was not faithful to his wife, Hera, he punished those who lied and broke oaths. But Zeus was represented as the god of justice and mercy, protector of weak and punisher of wicked. At the time of the fall of their father Cronus, the three gods drew lots from a helmet to see how they would divide rulership over the universe. While the earth and Mount Olympus were considered common ground to all, Zeus was given supreme reign over the sky, Hades the underworld and Poseidon dominion over the deep waters of the sea. When their father, Cronus, the three brothers divided up the rulership of the universe Poseidon received dominion over the seas. And the part you might not know is that he was also known as "the earth-shaker" for he carried a three tipped trident that he used to shatter the ground causing earthquakes. He presided over funeral rites and defended the right of the dead to due burial. Hades was also the god of the hidden wealth of the earth, from the fertile soil with nourished the seed-grain, to the mined wealth of gold, silver and other metals. Hades was devoured by Kronos as soon as he was born, along with four of his siblings. Zeus later caused the Titan to disgorge them, and together they drove the Titan gods from heaven and locked them away in the pit of Tartaros. When the three victorious brothers then drew lots for the division of the cosmos, Hades received the third portion, the dark dismal realm of the underworld, as his domain. Hades was the ruler of the underworld and the rights of the dead. But also the hidden wealth of the world such as the fertile soil with seed-grain and the mined wealth such as gold, silver and other metals. ( Theoi Project Copyright © 2000 - 2011, Aaron J. Atsma, New Zealand) T he story of the three brothers starts when they were first born. Their father Kronos heard of the prophecy that one of his sons would overthrow him, so he ate every one of his six children. But Zeus's mother saved him and gave Kronos a rock covered in the blankets of a child. Zeus was the son to overthrow his father, releasing his siblings. Then the dividing the universe between him and his brothers. Each god has a different story, but these three tie in at two basic points. Their childhood experience with their father (Kronos) and the dividing of the universe. The outcomes of the power given to the gods very much differs based of the amount of power given. My overall opinion of these gods is that they might be gods, but they still have human imperfections. No one is perfect even if you are a god.
