1. Describe the process of southern secession. What was the reaction of the
United States government to the southern states that seceded first?
2. What attempts were made to restore the Union after the attack on Fort
Sumter? Why did they fail? How did Lincoln respond?

going into the Civil War?
4. How did the Republican Party act to expand the American economy during the
