Playing with the Language
Select one of the following options and compose a well-crafted original creation of one page or
more. Your response should be in prose narrative form. As always, give credit to any websites
you use. Have fun!
1) Using a word unscrambler/anagram site, compose a personal philosophical statement using
some of the words created from your name. In your creation, underline/italicize the words
derived from your name and explore how they “fit” who you are.
2) Search the web and select two or three words with unusual origins and/or definitions.
Paraphrase the origin explanation/definition, then explain why you selected these words and
how this newfound knowledge affects your understanding and/or future use of the word.

3) Create a new name for a product or two. Describe in detail why you selected this name and
how you would reinforce it with a marketing campaign (television ads, print media, etc.). You
may want to search the web to find other marketing tips for product-naming.
4) Do a word-frequency search to see what words often appear in your written documents
(essays, social media pages, etc.) Select two or three of these words and explain why you think
you frequently use them. What are some other words that you could employ in the future to
avoid overuse? Think about the subtleties/nuances of the language as you work on this.
5) Create two or three new words and describe their origin (Hybrid? Compound?), definition,
and nuanced proper use. How/why do these new words fit a need not met by current words in
use?
