Review (briefly) propaganda techniques.
Read and analyze Viewing Information Media Critically in the PH WAG (p. 678-679)
o Identify propaganda techniques used in 2-5 T.V. commercials or watch a program that provides
news or other information. Identify the program and describe the topic(s) covered. Identify
the commercials during the program and what the commercial is selling. Evaluate the
information on the topic of the program and the commercials using the strategies in the PH
WAG book on p. 679 (homework)
o
Extra practice if needed- PH Supplemental Materials: Academic and Workplace Activity Book (p.
8)
Listen to a speech. (Choose a powerful speech from this website.) *Use as a daily launcher for at least
a week.
o Use the organizer to record information from the speech.
Discuss elements that are powerful in persuasive speeches.
Retell a fairytale from the point of view of a villain/antagonist. (group work) Convince the
reader/listener that you are innocent. The plot development retelling will need to include evidence that
supports your argument. (If students need more guidance, use Fractured Fairy Tales Website.)
Students must incorporate evidence to support your point of view. (refer to Georgia Standards lessons)
o Listeners will act as the jury- provide feedback on the argument- take a vote to determine guilt
or innocence.
Analyze the villain/antagonist speech for elements. Students may take two column notes.
o credible (credibility) means an argument is logically sound and well-supported with strong
evidence and reasoning.
o effective (effectiveness) means an argument works in convincing or persuading its audience.
o logical appeals (appeals to reason) facts, statistics, personal experience, expert authority,
interviews, observations


Read PH WAG p. 124-125 to present types of persuasive writing.
Complete (pre-reading activity) an admit slip for the Model from Literature- “The Eternal Frontier” PH
EOW p. 126-127.
o Admit slips are used from pre-reading. Students preview “The Eternal Frontier” illustration,
title, text and write three questions they think the reading will answer or list three pieces of
information they think they will learn from the reading.
Read “The Eternal Frontier” as a class using the Step-by-Step Teaching guide (PH WAG TE p. 126)
o Examine appeals the author used.
o Discuss author’s development of the argument.
Write a paragraph- Students should write a sentence persuading a friend to join a sports team. Then
list three reasons that support the sentence.
Differentiation:

Students who have not met standards: Begin with speeches from movies that students are high
interest. Discuss/Model the first two speeches (launcher activity) as a class before students work
independently. Provide notes for vocabulary.

Suggestion for student acceleration: Analyze speeches with a historical significance. Assign Model
From Literature for independent reading.
For this Lesson:
 Propaganda techniques PowerPoint
 Preview website and choose various speeches to use as a daily launcher activity.
 Copy the organizer to use with the speeches
 Optional- Fractured Fairy Tales Website
 Preview Georgia Standards lesson (villain/antagonist)
 PH WAG book p. 124-127, 678-679.
