AP World History
Reading Guide—Ch. 18
Russia c. 1450-1750
Food for Thought While Reading the Introduction
 What can you learn from the intro story about empire building and maintenance in this time period?
 What claims allowed the Russian tsars (also spelled czar) to establish their power?
 What claims led the new Russian kingdom to expand into Asia?
Russia’s Expansionist Policies under the Tsars
 What made Ivan III so “great”? In what ways did Russia need "reviving” when he came to power? How did he
embody the idea about claims made in the intro story?
 How was Russia in this period similar to the Macedonian and Roman empires in the Classical Period?
 Discuss—expansion of the Russian empire. Who? Where? Why? How? What vocab relates here?
 What happened to Central Asia in the 1450-1750 time period?
 How and why did early Russian tsars reconnect with the West?
 themes: trade and art/architecture
 Time of Troubles—discuss! What? Why? Result?
 Discuss the religious policies of Alexis Romanov. Results?
Russia’s First Westernization
 Here you should know about the reign of Peter the Great (r. 1689-1725) and his overall policy of
Westernization. Relate the information to the themes below. Were his policies popular?
 political—forms of governance? empires?
 economic—industries? trade? labor systems?
 social—gender roles
 cultural—science and technology? general cultural changes required by Peter?

You also need to know about the reign of Catherine the Great (note AFTER 1750…1762-96)
Themes:
 gender roles (in the sense that she was a woman!)
 revolts and revolutionaries
 forms of governance
 empire
***Don’t worry about the info about the Enlightenment (we haven’t studied that yet)
Themes in Early Modern Russian History c. 1450-1750—give special focus on themes in this section:
 labor systems—discuss the developments related to serfdom
 trade (although the OVERWHLEMING majority of the Russian people were rural farmers…don’t lose sight of
that overall!)
 What can you determine about social/economic classes from this reading?
Don’t worry about the section entitled “Russia and Eastern Europe”
BUT DO READ—the “In-Depth” on p. 402
 Can you tell what a multinational empire is (how is it different from a nation-state?) What challenges do
multinational empires face? These are some things to THINK about.
