TEKS 7.12C recognize levels of organization in plants and animals, including cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and organism Levels of Organization Notes *Go over notes below and then have students use response cards to identify the pictures on the power point as cells, tissues, organs, organ systems or organisms. *Two sets of response cards can be copied on different colored paper to have students differentiate if the structures are found in plants (green) or animals (blue or pink). *Response cards can be use in strips or can be laminated and then taped on popsicle sticks or straws. Cell: Basic unit of structure and function in all living organisms. Examples: animals- muscle, bone, nerve, blood, skin, egg, sperm, fat plants- epidermal, parenchyma, spongy, cambium, xylem, phloem Tissue: Similar cells working together to perform a specific function. Examples: animals- muscle, nervous, epithelial, connective plants- dermal, ground, vascular Organ: Different tissues working together to perform a specific function. Examples: animals- brain, stomach, intestines, heart, lungs, liver, etc… plants- leaves, buds, flowers, fruits, stems, roots, tubers, rhizomes Organ system: Group of different organs working together to perform a particular set of functions. Examples: animals- circulatory, respiratory, nervous, digestive, reproductive, muscular, skeletal, etc… plants- shoot, root Organism: Anything living that is made of cells and needs energy, excretes wastes, grows, responds, reproduces, and uses gases. Examples: animals, plants, bacteria, fungi, protists, monerans Response cards Cell Cell Tissue Tissue Organ Organ Organ system Organ system Organism Organism TEKS 7.12C recognize levels of organization in plants and animals, including cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and organism Levels of Organization Notes Cell: ________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ Examples: animals- muscle, bone, nerve, blood, skin, egg, sperm, fat plants- epidermal, parenchyma, spongy, cambium, xylem, phloem Tissue: _________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ Examples: animals- muscle, nervous, epithelial, connective plants- dermal, ground, vascular Organ: _____________________________________________ ______________________________________________ Examples: animals- brain, stomach, intestines, heart, lungs, liver, etc… plants- leaves, buds, flowers, fruits, stems, roots, tubers, rhizomes Organ system: ______________________________________________ ________________________________________________ Examples: animals- circulatory, respiratory, nervous, digestive, reproductive, muscular, skeletal, etc… plants- shoot, root Organism: _____________________________________________ ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ Examples: animals, plants, bacteria, fungi, protists, monerans
