2. Match the biome with its vegetation:
_d__ Tundra
_c_ Taiga
_f Temperate forest
_a_ Tropical rain forest
_e_ Prairie
_b Desert
A) broad-leaved evergreen, vines
B) shrubs & succulents
C) conifers
D) lichens, mosses, & low plants
E) continuous grasses
F) broad-leaved deciduous trees
3. Which biome has the least change in temperature from season to season?
Tropical Rainforrest
4. Name an abiotic factor that determines the distribution of biomes.
Precipitation and climate
5. This biome is found just south of the Arctic.
Taiga
6. The redwood forest on the California coast is an example of this biome.
Temperate rain forrest
7. This biome is subject to the most extreme daily temperature changes.
desert
8. The savanna region of Africa is a grassland that is the home of herds of animals. What biome
does this represent?
Tropical savannah
9. Snakes, lizards and kangaroo rats dominate this biome.
desert
10. Grey squirrels, deer, black bears raccoons & opossums dominate this biome.
Temperate rain forest
Answer the following questions in complete sentences:
11. Tropical rain forests have poor soil. How do many species of plants thrive?
Grow in layers, large leaves on the bottom(floor)of the forrest
12. What is a canopy?
Roof on the top of the forrest
13. A temperate deciduous forest has soil that is rich and deep. Why?
Rapid decay of plants and animals and nutrients are returned to the soil
14. What is the advantage of the needle shaped leaves of conifer trees?
Retain water for trees and protects trees against snow.
15. Why are desert soils rich in minerals but poor in organic matter?
No water
16. What does estivate mean?
Animals burrow under the ground during the warm season
17. Why do mosses and lichens grow in the Tundra?
They grow without soil
18.Using the information from the chart on pages 4–5, identify the biome described:
Temperate
Deciduous forrest
Temperate rain
forrestt
desert
taiga
tundra
Tropical rain
Grassland/prairie
This biome has hot and cold seasons, periodic
droughts, and very deep topsoil that is rich in
nutrients.
The soil and plants are similar to biome
described above, but the amount of rainfall is
greater and there is no cold season.
We tend to think of this biome as being hot, but
it may be very cold. Plants must be adapted
to store moisture and withstand the drying
winds.
Most rain falls during the short summers in this
biome. Plants must tolerate the nutrient poor,
acidic soils. Although the soil freezes in the
winter, it is not permanently frozen.
Conditions in this biome are even more severe
than the biome described above. Only the
surface of the soil thaws during the summer.
Seasons are determined by rainfall rather than
temperature. Plants grow throughout the
year. The soil has few nutrients and
becomes hard if exposed to the sun.
The biome where you live.
