Molecular Shapes Project Due April 21, 2011 at Midnight
You will create a presentation using the application of your choice (Animoto, Glogster, PhotoPeach,
VoiceThread, WIX, Prezi.) You will include the information presented below in your presentation.
Finally, you will submit the link to your published product into the Google Form on my Website.
I. Research Molecular Shapes (see list below). Use the concepts behind VSEPR Theory to briefly
explain why/how each molecular shape occurs including: State the bond angle(s) according to the
VSEPR Theory (2pts each shape). Provide an example substance for each shape (2pts each shape).
Identify the number of shared electron pairs and lone electron pairs for each shape below (2pts each
shape).
Molecular Shapes:
Linear
Bent
Trigonal Planar
Trigonal Pyramidal
Tetrahedral
II. Create a Graphic of
Linear (10pt)
Bent (10pt)
Trigonal Planar (10pt)
Trigonal Pyrimidal (10pt)
Tetrahedral (10pt)
(Some suggestions for creating your image: use a program like Paint, Sumo paint, etc… create a
drawing and scan it in, or create models with household items and take a picture)
III.
Polar vs. Nonpolar. Research the difference between polar and nonpolar geometries.
Identify which molecular shapes are polar and nonpolar.
a.
Define Polar (2pts)
b.
Define Nonpolar (2pts)
c.
Identify the polarity of each of the shapes above (2pts each shape)
