RESEARCH QUESTION: How did CPR Affect Society?
I.
SUBSIDIARY QUESTION #1: What is CPR?
A. CPR is an easy way to learn to save someone’s life.

1. CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. (Lawson, 65).
2. CPR is an emergency procedure giving oxygen- carrying blood to the heart and brain.
(Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation CPR).
3. CPR is used to treat someone who has stopped breathing or whose heart is as stopped.
(Lawson, 65).
4. Electric shock causes a burn and respiratory which is the need to do CPR. (Lawson,
65).
5. CPR is mainly used on someone who is having a heart attack, serious injuring, almost
drowning or drug overdose. (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation CPR).
6. CPR is important in saving lives because after four to six minutes without the flow of
oxygen blood, brain cells begin to die, then after 10 minutes brain death results.

7. Applying CPR can quickly save someone’s life. (Lawson, 65).
8. Cardiac arrest: the pumping action of the heart caused by cessation of rhythmic
activity, from electrical shock. (Lawson, 65).
9. When someone is in cardiac arrest and someone has to give them CPR, they should do
chest compression and mouth to mouth. (the giving of oxygen). (Gordon).
10. 20 to 50% of cardiopulmonary arrest victims can be saved if CPR is preformed

SUBSIDIARY QUESTION #2: What Effect did CPR have on the Time Period?
A. Since there wasn’t a lot of medical technology CPR in the 1960’s were one of the ways
to save someone’s life.

1. The American Medical Association (AMA) called mouth to mouth resuscitation “An
easily learned life saving procedure.” (The Advent of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation”).
2. American physicians named James Elam and Peter Safar were the first researchers of
airway A & breathing B components of CPR. (The Advent of Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation).
3. Elam doubted the method of Artificial Respiration. (The Advent of Cardiopulmonary

4. Artificial Respiration is the use of arm lifts and slow pressure to the chest. (The

5. Peter Safar became very interested in Resuscitation research. There for, in 1956 with a
lot of volunteers, he practiced and focused on mouth to mouth resuscitation. (The Advent

6. James Elam thought that giving expired oxygen directly to the victims mouth to nose

7. The discovery of artificial circulation was accidental and was rediscovered and they

8. William Kourwenhoven, an engineer and G. Guy Knickerbocker, they studied

9. Ventricular fibrillation is an inefficient, quivering heart rhythm that leads to Cardiac

10. Knickerbocker noticed a rise in blood pressure when he touched a living this with

11. Defibrillation paddles is an instrument that delivers an electric shock to return they
