CONSTITUTION OF GROOVE THEORY
Preamble
We, the members of Groove Theory do hereby establish this Constitution on
September 21, 2001 in order that our purpose be realized to its fullest extent, and that the
formation of this group be established.
ARTICLE I: Name
Groove Theory
ARTICLE II: Purpose
The purpose of this organization is to offer Georgetown University students the
opportunity to learn, teach and enjoy hip-hop dance. The social interaction provided by
Groove Theory will enable students with similar interests in dance to get together and use
their creativity to foster their dance skills and confidence in performance. Groove Theory
was founded because there are no exclusively hip-hop dance groups offered on campus at
Georgetown University and there are too many non-hip-hop dance talent requirements in
other organizations.
Groove Theory is fully aware of the University policies and will obey all
university guidelines and restrictions. We are fully committed to fulfilling our
responsibilities and abiding by Georgetown University’s policies.
ARTICLE III: Membership
All members must be full-time undergraduate students in good academic standing
(GPA of 2.0 or above). Membership is based on Georgetown university enrollment and
selection through the audition process. The audition process is as follows: a person
desiring membership must a) attend the mandatory interest meeting held at the beginning
of the fall semester, b) attend the practice where the managers teach the choreography
necessary for the tryout and c) perform the choreography and a short free-style for the
managers, who will judge each audition and then choose the members.
The management team, which will consist of no more than five no less than three
members, will lead the group, choreograph, book events, etc., will be appointed by the
managers from the previous year and the decision will be made at the end of an academic
year (May) for the following year.
Non-acceptance of membership or voluntary withdrawal from the group will be
accepted, but formal dues, if they should become necessary, will not be refunded.
Groove Theory openly admits undergraduate students to its membership and does
not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, sex, national origin, gender identity, or
sexual orientation.
ARTICLE IV: Officers and Operations
Groove Theory works in a flat organizational structure, where-by members are
able to share responsibility, but will be subordinate to the managers, who, as the officers,
will have voting rights in the managers for the following year. All managers will have
the same amount of functional power in making group decisions, but the labor associated
with leading the group, namely, coordinating practice, correspondence with the members,
choreography, event planning, marketing, communication with university officials and
managing finances, will be divided equally between the managers.
The managers will be required to meet on additional dates to create and organize
the choreography. No practice time will be allotted for choreography purposes.
The managers may hold their status as long as they are members in Groove
Theory, but must accept ideas and information from the other members. If a manager
decides to step down, a new manager will be appointed by the remaining managers. If all
managers decide to step down, the members will vote on a new management team. If a
manager fails to fulfill his or her duties, he will be removed only through the voting of
the other managers, with a 50% or more consent. If all managers fail to fulfill their
duties, any current active member can present a formal grievance in writing to the
management team, outlining his or her specific complaints. If the management team does
not conform to the requests of the member within a month of being notified, the member
can make a motion to impeach the managers. All current active members will vote on the
motion by secret ballot. The managers will be impeached in the event of a two-thirds
vote or more to do so.
The managers will appoint an Officer of Alumni Relations each year. This person
will be responsible for sending monthly emails to Groove Theory Alumni, updating them
on the group’s current projects, upcoming performance dates, and volunteer work. The
goal of the Officer of Alumni Relations is to continue to foster a strong relationship
between current and former members of Groove Theory and create a larger sense of
Groove Theory community that might allow us opportunities not possible otherwise.
We recognize that all managers must be full-time undergraduate students.
ARTICLE V: Finances
There are no standard membership dues at this point, although each member is
responsible for funding the purchase of his or her uniform. As Groove Theory does not
have officers in the traditional sense, part of one manager’s duty each year will be
managing the group’s finances. This person must be a member for a minimum of two
academic years. They will oversee fundraising and the selling of t-shirts, negotiation of
and withdrawal of funds from our budget, ordering uniforms, etc.
Groove Theory is fully willing to comply with all financial policies, including
placing all funds in the University account.
ARTICLE VI: Amendments
Amendments may be proposed or changed by a member of Groove Theory who
has had at least one year of experience with the organization, by submission in writing to
the management team. The managers will determine whether the new or changed
proposal should be voted on by the members. If so, two-thirds of current active members
must vote yes in order for the new or changed proposal to go into effect.
Ratified: Oct 2006
