Your Spelling Words

ABC Order – Write your words in alphabetical order.
Rainbow words – write your words in three colors.
Backwards words – write your words forwards, then
backwards, then forwards again.
Silly Sentences – Use all your words in ten sentences.
Picture words – Draw a picture and write your words in
the picture.
Words without vowels – write your words replacing all
vowels with a line.
Story words – write a short story using all your words.
Scrambled words – write your words, then write them
again with the letters mixed up. Trade with a friend to
unscramble the words.
Word search – Make a word search with a friend. Then

Surround words – write your words on graph paper and
color the surrounding squares to see the shape of your
word.
Ransom words – write your words by cutting letters out
of newspapers and magazines.
Pyramid words – Write your words adding or taking away
one letter at a time to make a pyramid shape.
Magazine words – Find your words in old magazines or
newspapers. Cut them out and glue them on paper.
Sound words – Use a tape recorder and record yourself
spelling your words. Then listen to the tape, checking to

X words – write your word going across, then again going
down with the middle letter shared between them.
Choo-choo words – write the entire list end-to-end as one
long word, using different colors of crayon or ink for
different words.
Backwriting – Using your finger, draw each letter on a
partner’s back, having the partner say the word when you
complete it.
Flashwriting – In a darkened room, use a flashlight to
draw the letters in the air.
Popsicle words – make words using popsicle sticks to form
the letters.
Etch a Sketch – write your words on an etch-a-sketch.
Magic Finger words – write your words with your finger in
a cookie tray filled with sand, salt, or chocolate syrup!
Magnet words – spell your words on the fridge using
letter magnets.
Puzzle words – write your words, then cut them apart so
each letter is separate, mix them up, then put them back
together.
Clap – clap your words, one clap for each letter – up high
above your head for a tall letter, (like t, f, or l) at your
belly button for a middle letter, (c, a, s) and down at your
feet for a low letter (y,g,p).
Partner words – With a partner, spell your words taking
turns saying the next letter.
