Importance of Hand Hygiene
D & C: Good morning principal, teachers and fellow schoolmates.
D:
I am Donna from 4D.
C:
I am Chloe from 6S.
D:
Do you know what in your hands are?
C:
I am holding a microphone only.
D:
No. Your hands carry millions of microbes. Many of them are harmless, but some may
cause illnesses, such as common cold, flu and diarrhea. As germs are invisible and present
everywhere in the environment, we can easily pick up germs from various objects, such as
doorknobs and stair railings. If you recall how many things you touch everyday and how
often you wash your hands, you will know how dirty your hands are.
C:
Ah, yes. As I know, the Department of Health (DH) highlighted the importance of hand
hygiene in infectious disease prevention and control at a ceremony organised in support
of the World Health Organization's "SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands" campaign on
May 5. Therefore, we should wash our hands before preparing and taking food. The
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the USA reports that handwashing
is one of the most important means of preventing the spread of infection. It is the first line
of defence against infectious diseases
D:
Moreover, after going to the toilet, handling raw foods, coughing, sneezing or blowing the
nose, we should wash our hands thoroughly.
C:
Remember rubbing hands with soap for just a few seconds can only get some of those
microbes off. For a thorough washing, you should rub your hands for at least 10 seconds.
Before handling foods, you should rub for 20 seconds.
D:
Lastly, dry your hands with a paper towel and turn off the tap by holding it with a paper
towel .If you use a cloth to dry your hands, make sure that the cloth is clean and dry.
C&D:
Hope all of you can pay more attention to the hand hygiene. Thank you.
