Instructions and requirements for Civil War Timeline
1. Put the following events in chronological order on a timeline (blank paper to be
given to you and you make the timeline) along with the date (if only year is given,
use just the year, if not put as much of the date as possible)
a. Battle of Antietam

d. Battle of Gettysburg
e. 1st and 2nd battle of Bull run
f. Clash of the Ironclads

m. Gen. Robert E. Lee takes charge of Confederate Army
n. Gen. George McClellan is fired by Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant becomes
leader of Union army.
2. Mark the battles listed above along with the month and year on the map provided
for you. Use your chart that you have already completed to help you. (Yes I know
this seems like you are doing it all over again, but this will help you analyze war
strategies. To do this, you will need the visual. This idea also just came to my
head.)
3. For each battle on the map, mark an “O
for
Confederate victory.
4. Make sure to find the Mississippi river.
5. Make sure you know which states were Union and which were Confederacy. Use
the maps you made.
6. Answer the following questions on the back of the map
a. What was so significant (important) about the 54th Massachusetts
infantry?
b. Explain the terms of the Emancipation Proclamation. Did it free all the
slaves? Why were some Northerners opposed to the Emancipation
Proclamation? (hint: look in Ch. 19 section 4)
c. Why was the Mississippi so important for the Union to get control of?
What battles helped the Union to achieve control of the Mississippi?
(hint: use your battles map)
d. The South lost the war, should the United States now consider them
traitors and punish them? What would you do if you were President
Lincoln? Explain in at least 2 paragraphs
